All About Pocket Knives

Anyone have an opinion on the quality of Northwoods knives; fit/finish or steel? Thanks.

A description from a Northwoods knife from Big Don Don's store:

"Like all Northwoods knives this one is made by Queen with special Schatt Morgan finish."

I don't own one, but they look great, and if Queen makes them, I bet they are good quality knives featuring various steels (D2, 1095, etc.)

I don't about present day, but just a few (4 or 5) years ago, I was acquainted with one of the owners of Northwoods and he told me that their fixed blade knives were made in Michigan by some of the former Marbles Knives employees and their sons who were trained by them. They couldn't get the Marbles name, but they got everything else. John Cable of Cable Knives was my source and he is a stand-up sort of guy. I have no reason to doubt him and the fixed blade prototype I got from him attests to the quality. I don't know squat about their folders and don't own any. If anyone has more or better info, I'm willing to listen.

Well I just happen to have some Northwoods done in Ivory.

So they are not EDC knives, but these are well built.

I like those! Seeing that shield reminds me of some of their folders I've seen. Don't they also use the "Scagel" type nail pull?

Gary will do! I think I'll keep it for a little while, since the Mountain Man is one of my favorite knife patterns. I really do Love the feel of Elephant Ivory! Here's an American made Ivory Marbles I got from Forensic Jim, made by the same Folks!

Well Lucky.......there you have it. Some very nice pieces by Northwoods/Queen. I own a few myself and they are quality knives.


Mitch, that is some of the finest Ivory I have seen on a modern day knife...............excellent! Look at the grain on that bad boy. I don't know if it's the lighting or what..................but WOW!

Gary the photo of this Mountain Man's Ivory is pretty true! This is a Sunburst photo of the knife, who I bought it from. You know Ralph always somehow seems to find the best quality knives out there!

Thanks guys, all beautiful knives that you have. I have been looking at a stag handle folding hunter; that looked nice for the price. I have only had one Northwoods a few years ago; an ivory toothpick; seems on that one the cutout for the shield was poorly done. After the knives that you have shown; might be time to take another look.

Ken, to answer your question; No, I only bought the Ivory Mountain Man from Mr. Sunburst.

Ken, the toothpick was mine; it dosen't show it in the photo but there was to large of a gap; around the shield and ivory. The ivory could have been; cut to a closer tolerance to install the shield. Other than that no problems; got my eye on a folding hunter.

I have a couple too, very well made.

I am confused by the reference to Queen and Shatt & Morgan. I was pretty certain that they are made in Michigan, the Marbles conection did not seem far fetched.

Can anyone positively clarify if there really is a queen conection or not???

I happen to be staying in Titusville tonight, going over to GEC tomorrow to see what they have!!!! Maybe I will try and break into Queen also, they don't seem to be the best at marketing, but got to love their knives!

As far as I understood it,queen makes the knives, and northwoods put the handles on.Do not take that as definitive,but thats what I was led to believe.
