Shapleigh Cotton Sampler

Guys,
I don't know much about Shapleigh, other than it was a competing hardware brand that bought out Simmons Keen Kutter. I almost bid on this Cotton Sampler (or maybe a Maize knife?), but I couldn't tell if it was legit or a re-shaped hawkbill.
Any opinions? I am going to kick myself if it was legit - the buyer got a pretty good deal on it if it is the real deal.

I don't know for sure either, but that short blade just looks odd.

Looks to be Re-worked to me, I don't care for the blade.

Looks a little off to me also. When I see a 2-1/2" blade in a 3-7/8" knife a red flag goes up.I also notice that the seller never shows a pic of the knife with the blade closed. I'm sure a savy buyer would quickly see the obvious if he did that.

if it is legit it's a maize knife, the blades were similar in shape to a sampler minus the large choil that would explain the short blade in the long handle

All the maize/corn knives I've ever seen haven't been that big.
I still think it's re-profiled hawk.

A corn knife is something totally different. The size the seller gives is spot on for a maize knife. Most maize knives used the same frame as the manufacturer's hawkbill with a funny looking spey blade instead of a pruner

M-M, I think you are right on. Great old maize knife in excellent condition.
Someone got a great deal on this one.

I am looking in Alvin Sellens book on Keen Kutters, and he shows two Maize knives - one is 4 inches, and one is 3 3/4 inches. He also shows a Cotton Sampler at 4 1/2 inches.
The Maize knives look like a cross between a Cotton Sampler and a budding knive. i.e. the blade are short compared the handle like a budding knife. The Maize knives are bigger than a budding knife but smaller than the Cotton Sampler.
Both the Maize knives look just like the one in the auction. I think someone got a good deal on a nice old Maize knife.
