This is a Counterfeit Or Fake To Learn By. Made from parts. The person
set up at shows with 100s of these, all diff brand names on is table for sale.

Look at it and learn from it. ( everthing is from parts )
They maybe selling on Ebay now with many Ebay names.

C'mon
Look at the pins, the stag, the indentations at the stamping, the lack of fit at the bolsters....
As fake as they get!

The blades look rounded, like they've been heavily buffed. Also, I haven't seen stockmans tang stamped on all the blades.

Shaking my head.. Think of the impact on the market when all these knives show up for sale in 15 years or so. Uneducated buyers, slippery sellers.

Hi folks. New to AAPK but not new to knives. I've been following this guys knives for a couple of weeks now and yeah, some really sad crap going on here. This guy is taking old Kutmaster parts (at least on this knife: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT) , cleaning them up and making a killing on eager, uneducated, wanna-be collectors. You'll notice that the link I posted must've got returned to him because he's got it listed again with a mention that it's been "reworked". Now if he'd just admit it isn't Case!

Just because a guy knows how to build knives doesn't mean he should copy and counterfeit. I know how to use a gun. Does that mean I should become a criminal? I own a car. Should I enter the next Indy 500? Why can't we use our powers for good instead of evil? Quick! You distract him and I'll take away his tang stamps!

Whew! Thanks for the rant time. This guy is just doing one of the few things that stops me from being cute and cuddly (okay, he pisses me off!).

Couldn't agree with you more. There are many new knife collecters who have good intentions in building a collection. They go to ebay with money to spend. However, eventually the buyers of these counterfeit knives are going to find out they have a collection of worthless junk.
You think they are going to stay in the hobby. No, they will leave with a bad taste in their mouth, never to return.
Thus, we all lose potential buyers. This mistrust hurts all of us.
Now, the question is, how do we get rid of these counterfeiting a..holes?

I read these threads about counterfeiting as I find they are very interesting but I always wonder about how people can make these fakes. As the blades are hardened how do these guys put new stampings into the tangs? How do they make the scales to appear so old and correct?

I think it would be a really good idea to put up in some sort of "stickie" that explains exactly how counterfeits are done to look so real so that people who are new to collecting know how the fakes are made so easily and in the same permanent posting put how to spot the fake work.

If I am curious as to how these criminals do their stuff there must be a lot of others who don't want to publically admit how little they know about these acts or collecting - How they do it and then how to spot the clues if buying what one thinks is a collectable knife.

I think this is a great idea. It would be great to get two intentical early knives, one mint and one "Cleaned to near mint" to compare side by side. Maybe we could get the bay to advertise the thread on all knife listings ))

Glad you mentioned it. Here is a post I made some time back that just gives one angle to making/spotting a counterfeit. Also, buying the books I mention in this post is a huge help. The guy that did these knives just went further and didn't use anything that was authentic.

Most of them are not even close to correct yhat is how to spot them quickly

The very first tell-tell sign of a fake is the words NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS in the description of any brand of knife on FEE-BAY. If a knife is legit, the honest seller that stands behind his knives has no problem offering a return/refund option. Those sellers that don't offer them, well....you get exactly what you ask for. If you choose to pay $XXX.xx amount of dollars for something that "MIGHT" be what the seller says it is, then a fool and his money is soon parted. YOU are the only person that can stop a counterfeiter from taking your money. Ask yourself one question before you pull the trigger on that next FEE-BAY rare knife auction, is it really worth the chance? Nuff said.
