All About Pocket Knives

Our esteemed moderator, Dale (Orvet) would like to compile a list of Ulster tang stamps, with an eye to dating Ulster knives. He has brought us some great lists, to help us find out about our old knives, so I thought I'd do my bit by starting this thread to help out.
If you have some Ulster knives, and can do some close up images, please post a picture of the knife, followed by its tang stamp. A group of three or four with similar stamps might help the project from becoming too tedious, so that is what I suggest, but any way you can help, would be much appreciated.

Here's a fairly rare ELLENVILLE stamp.

Ulster
Knife Co.
N.Y.

"Remember the Maine" etch, faded away.
And another Ellenville stamp.

Comparison of older and newer etches. If anyone knows the different ways to etch, maybe they can comment on how these two etches differ??
Early tang stamp, one with USA, and an OT stamp.

I suspect that the two etches are acid and electrolysis. The acid removes metal whilst the latter seems to just stain it.

So the darker/later one is electrolysis; stained dark, while the first one is acid etched, showing bright metal, right??

That's the way it looks to me. That electric process was a lot cheaper and cleaner, but it did/does not yield the lasting results of the acid etch.

Oh, BTW, THOSE are some AWESOME old knives you've shown. THANKS!!

Not a very good picture, but I have a few Ulsters, in various patterns.


And my better one, a daddy barlow. Very well made knife with the strongest snap of any I own.
