AN old Camillus that looks almost new

Says Croll & Keck, 622 Penn St

Purina. Top one is about mint. Bottom one has been all apart and heavily "cleaned".


Colonial on top Syracuse on the bottom says "GRADUATION 1940"

Just did some googling, found Croll & Keck was a store in Reading, PA.

You just HAD to post some ad knives didn't you? I looked through my pics of ad knives and I don't know where to begin.Shall I just do knives or letter opener knives?Here's a sampling of each;some in English;some not.

Amazing collection, knife7knut!!!

A few only in my camp. This one was a gift for customers at our family business, which was a going concern from before WWI, to the early 1970s. Made by Camillus.

I posted this in the spatula thread, but guess it belongs here too.
This one is different, a cigar cutter that takes a razor blade as a replaceable cutting edge.
Please excuse the others in the pic that are not advertising cutters.

Y'all be sure to eat that Pure Foods Gelatin before you light that big ol' stoggie!

That's a great little Camillus mini bar knife.Your spatula is in much better shape than mine.Those cigar cutters are a bit unusual with advertising on them.I have several but only one has advertising(B.P.O.E.)for the Elks.

This is an ad knife made by Zippo for one of their Sales Reps, Bil Feldhaus.


Bill Feldhaus was a member of the Greatest Generation and the Zippo Rep who called on me when I ran 3 smoke shops and a cutlery store.
Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific during WWII.
After the war he went to work for Zippo.
He gave this advertising knife to me before he retired in 1990, after working for Zippo for 45 years!
He bragged there were only two jobs he had ever held, the Marine Corps and Zippo.

As you can see it does bear evidence of having been on my key ring for quite some time.

In 1924, pioneering Shenandoah seedsman Henry Field built a radio station on top of his seedhouse. He began broadcasting country entertainment, information and of course, using the medium to inform folks about his wares. His company expanded their product offerings to include everything that his rural customer's might want - including the radios to listen to his broadcasts on!

To put this into context, this use of the brand new technology of broadcast radio put Field on the cutting edge and one of less than 300 radio stations operating in the country at the time.

The slogan of the call letters his station was assigned, KFNF, was "Keep Friendly, Never Frown".

The radio station changed ownership and location several times over the decades and was most recently acquired by McCook Radio Group in Nebraska.

I have a few Schrade wire jacks but all have the G.Schrade stamping in one style or another.Also that blue paint looks almost to be original to the knife;wonder if it was an SFO?
Here is probably my rarest advertising knife(letter opener):a Case Tested XX with a very unusually shaped handle.Sort of a coffin style.
A very well respected knife expert(not BRL)told me that Case never made a Tested letter opener knife.Oh well:so much for experts!

I doubt it. If you look close at the tang stamp you can see some blue paint on the tang.

I have only seen the inserts painted, red or green. The wire frame was always plated steel.

That CASE letter opener is the berries!!

That picture is a bit mis-leading. It looks like blue paint but it isn't. After you said what you did, I got the knife out and there is no blue paint on that side of tang anywhere. The blue paint is chipped and missing in a lot places but it sure looks like it was dipped before the knife was assembled. There is a smear on the back side where it rubs the frame. There is no paint on the bottom side of the tang that doesn't rub ( by the kick ).

My new camera got here yesterday and I can get some better pics. I took those at work the other night when we were waiting for an ice to hit that never materialized. THAT didn't hurt my feelings any. Just screwed me out of some serious sleepy time. LOL

I don`t believe the blue paint is original, I would be very surprised if it was. Looking close at your picture I can see some red paint on the metal insert near the spring at the bottom. Can you see it? If I were a betting man I would bet the house there is another color under that blue on the center inserts, not the frame, and it is red paint.

Have a closer look and let me know

A complimentary Railroad Jones Oil Company knife from 1927. I have found very little information on Railroad Jones Oil Company. In the mid 1920s there were 4 Railroad Jones stations in Winston-Salem, in 1929 there were 7, by the end of 1930 there were 10. They were independent until early 1930, then they started selling Pure. From there the trail goes cold. I have the word out to friends whose families have been in Winston for generations to ask the old folks about Railroad Jones gas stations, so maybe I can pick up some more information. Anyway, this old beat up knife has sure opened up a lot of questions for me. Where were the stations? Did they survive the depression, to eventually get rebranded as Pures? Did they merge with one of the other distributors? Any pictures out there? I'm hoping to get a call from an old-timer one day with the whole story of Railroad Jones Oil Company.

This knife has it all, Chicago Union Stock Yards was the worlds largest market for selling live stock in open competition from 1865 to the 1950's. On top of that J.M.DOUD was a brother to MAMIE EISENHOWER. And then there was good old JACK KNIFE BEN.
