All About Pocket Knives

Another favorite pattern that as far as I know only Queen makes in their Schatt & Morgan line is the Swaybelly Trapper. At 4 1/8" closed and 1 1/8" across at the base this pattern (#042101) feels real good to me in the hand. 1st time I saw it was in the 5th Annual Reproduction Series in Stag. Queen also included it in the 6th Series set, plus the File & Wire Series in ATS-34 if you were lucky enough to find one. I liked this pattern so much I got an extra in ATS-34 steel and use it regularly. This pattern sports a large California Clip and Spey blade. They are both 3" long and 5/8" wide. Half stops and lined bolster complete the package. There was a set of 4, SFO's made in 2004 and another set of 4 made this year. Boy this sure is another one I would like to see produced in 1095 steel.

The only 1 left to add to this thread is the File & Wire.

If they made a slim, single blade version I would have to be digging for my money.

I have been after Clarence for about a year now to have this pattern made in 1095 steel...even offered to "go in" on the deal with him. But it don't look good.

Dave, is the stag from the 1995 set made of 1095? Seems I remember reading somewhere that Queen made some early Shatts in 1095 carbon?

No 1095 was not used in any of the Series sets. 1995 Series V was a set of five knives with 920 sets produced, four in Burnt Stag and one of Presentation Grade Mother of Pearl. Queen for all but two Series sets IX and X used 440A/420HC steel, sets IX and X used ATS-34 on master blade and 420HC on the other blades.
I also talked with Clarence about using 1095 on some of his orders from Queen but I don't think we will see that happen anytime soon.

Well by now most of you know I have a broblem with spelling.

This Swaybelly ? or Sway Belly ? or Sowbelly ?

I checked my files and found all 3 ways of spelling. I checked other web sites and I think their are 2 differant patterns ?
Swaybelly and Sowbelly are not the same. If its a trapper then it is called a Swaybelly, AM I RIGHT ??

you are correct in that they are two different patterns.
a swaybelly is any jack knife with a handle featuring a gentle curve, or "sway," in which the back spring is convex in shape.
conversely, a swayback is gently curved so that the back spring is concave.
a sowbelly features a handle with a more drastic bend, found on the opposite side of the center pivot rivet from the master blade (usually a clip blade).
these are usually found in stockman configurations, with clip, castrator and sheepfoot blades.
the castrator blade is usually found on the "bent" end.
this gives that particular blade more of a "pistol" grip.

aimus, the only schatts i know of with 1095 steel were some harness jacks they made many years ago.
i have no idea why they don't use it more often - it's extremely inexpensive and fits well with the "vintage" feel of schatt & morgan knives.
