All About Pocket Knives

Well I guess it's time for another poll/quiz for Bulldog knives. I won't give the name of the model, yet. These are supposed to get harder as we go. There is an obvious difference in these 2 Bulldog Knives.

I know this will be easy for norsefan, so I have a tougher question for him at his request .

Correct, I assume you know the name of this series and which is first and second generations.

was it the old chum set? oops, i thought they were both first generation. round bolsters, large and small shield, 3 5/8". are they stag?

The 3 5/8" 4 Blade Congress Old Chum Set is correct and they are Stag handled. The shield will tell you the generation.

i give up. according to my reference material. the 3 5/8 congress is first gen. etched with our best, stag w/sm crest shield (bkc 212) and etched with our best, stag w/lg crest shield(bkc212a). i can't find a reference to a later 3 5/8" congress.

help, i'm lost.

Olderdogs or Norsefan, any comments from you guys!

The second generation bulldog knives are generally the ones that have the A after the number. Most were made in quanities of 36 or so and have the 1st generation blades but have been modified somewhat to distinguish them from the 1st generation, in this case the larger shield, A after the number, and 36 made all mean that 212A, the one on the right, is a second generation knife. Jim Parker had those made in 1991 after he had bought the trademark and parts from Charlie Dorton. They are fairly easy to tell when you know the quantity and see the letter A after the #. The original #s were assigned by the Bulldog Collector's Club and were included in a book by Tony Foster in 1990. Parker assigned the new #s with the A"s when he had the knives made in 1991. Sometimes the handle material is different or the shield but there is always something to tell them apart from the original 1st generation knives. Hope this helps.

I knew he would have a perfect explanation. So, when you see an A after a BKC#, it is usually a second generation when listed with the first generation knives. The books don't explain that and that is information that you can only get from a long time Bulldog collector like olderdogs1. It looks like a lot was learned from these 2 knives.

You were just so close, one bit of information that you won't find in a book. Actually you did very well, a bit of information that long time Bulldog collectors know, trying to get that information out there. Olderdogs gave a great explanation.

i mainly collect case but i have other brands as well. i read everything i can get my hands on, but you can't beat experience. that's what makes belonging to forums worthwhile.
