Empire with cutout on main blade

Good looking Empire Knife Co., Winsted, CT knife on eBay. Main blade has cutout, anyone seen this before?

Nice 'seeing' you on AAPK again merlechris.
The first thought that comes to me is that there was a big chip in the blade which was ground out smooth. Makes a good story. Salesman samples were just ink marked on the blade.
Be careful of the seller. He's a grumpy old knife repairman.
BTW : Do you have any Wolfertz you're tired of ?

looks like it was used as a screwdriver.don't ask....
at least it isn't the "rare cigar-cutter model"
possibly made that way to prevent "loss" of the sample

Sellers description of the knife in question:
3 1/2" closed, E.O knife. The master blade is full with a cut out in the blade.The knife and letter head were found together on a wall. I have no iudea why the cut out in blade except maybe a salesman sample. Anyone knows let me know.The tangs are all marked (Empire/Winsted Conn). All blades walk and talk, 1/2 stops. Handles are ebony, no cracks. The letter head comes with knife. Condition:High Excellent

Certainly can't believe everything you read, particularly on eBay. However I have bought from this seller before, no complaints.
Knife looks to have been well cared for. Just can't imagine why the cutout. Another mystery.
P.S. My dad is the real Wolfertz collector. I've only got a couple. He said that they've been hard to find this last year (Southwest Ohio), at least in our price range.
