6YR OLD SCOUT IS EXCITED ABOUT HOBO KNIFE SET.
BRINGS IT TO THE ONE PLACE HE CAN SHOW IT OFF,SCHOOL.
HE WAS EVEN CAUGHT USING IT PROPERLY.HE WAS EATING HIS LUNCH!!!
I WOULD LOOK AT THE TEACHER AND TELL THEM FOR EVERY HOBO KNIFE SET USED THATS ONE MORE PLASTIC TREE SAVED!

Isn't it something how the world can change so fast in just one person's lifetime? When I was in grade school all the boys sat under the big willow tree that hung over the play ground and we all whittled with knives while talking about a squirrel hunt or our hound dog but never talked about girls. We was told they had some kind of a funny named tick or flea like critter called cooties that none of us want to get and maybe pass it on to our hounds.
Times sure have changed. Now days if a good kid carries a pocket knife or mentions the word gun in a hunting story to his buddies at school they get thrown in a cell beside Charles Manson. This is a sad America to have to look at now. We fear our selves and are our own worst enemy.

I have been giving pocket knives to kids (with parents consent) for 30 years. They love'em. Hooks'em in forever. Also been teaching kids to shoot safely that long. Just another way to promote freedom.

Give it a try. Best way I know to show a kid you care and counteract the commie pc agenda. Greg

I agree with you hog but if you do that now days you would be labeled as a Don and the recruiter of your own organized crime family. Your best intentions will always be seen in a negative way in today's world. It all leads back to ignorant laws and manditory policies that are pushed onto the public and HAVE to be implemented and followed or the repercussions are that school, city, or county will not receive any state or federal funding for schools, roads, ect. until they are. Freedom now doesn't mean what it used to mean 40, 50, or 60 years ago.

Aimus; I understand what you are saying. I am already labeled many negative things because I still believe in the constitution. I continue giving knives with parents permission, they still let me teach their kids to shoot.

Frankly; freedom still has the same meaning. I refuse to be intimidated by the PC crowd. It may carry a price. So be it.

Hell, I know it's the same with most of you gents, but you were looked down upon if you did NOT have a knife when I was in school.

We used to "squib' load our muzzle loaders and ring the bell on the side of the gymnasium during lunch hour. I looked at that old bell a few years back and it still has white streaks on it from the round balls we smacked off of it. That was in the late 60's.

We had cartridge guns but the charcoal burners were more fun.

Pretty much every pickup ( about 2/3rds of the vehicles ) in the school parking lot had a rifle or a shotgun in the rack. Strange that none of those guns ever went wild and started murdering folks. Guess we lucky or our guns were better trained than the ones they make now.

The knife pictured below, is the very first knife I bought when I was 12 years old from a local gun shop.

Of course I bought the biggest one I could find! It measures 11 3/4" open, 6 3/4' closed.
The Remington boy scout knife is in the pic is for size comparison, the Remington was the size knife most guys carried.

A few teachers seen it and never bothered me about it, just said keep it in your pocket till after school.

Can you imagine if a kid was caught with this one on him in school today?

Sorry fellows. Those days are gone forever. Reading the thread about "mumbelty peg" brought back lots of good memories. My God! In the early '50s, I got to carry Dad's Winchester Model '94 30-30 rifle and had his Marbles 12" hunting knife on my belt during a drama production at our Jr. high school in North Denver. If a kid came to school today armed like that, they would have the Swat Team, the ATF, the FBI, the DHS and as many rent-a-cops they could find on the scene. Over kill MAYBE but probably for a good reason............. times ARE different now.

What in the world can we do with a system so broken and screwed up? ? ? I certainly do not have any answers. It just saddens and bewilders me to see this nation, with such potential for good, raising a huge population of kids who are useless thugs and killers that too soon will become adult thugs and killers. ? ? ? ?

I could write a whole dissertation on this; let me distill it. What worked then:

Fear of God

Fear of Mom and Dad who used a belt- an old fashioned nuclear home.

Fear of "Riding the Lightening"- keeps the thugs and killers thinned out.

I'd speculate that those 3 items alone would bring civility back quickly. Now getting there in a nation that has corrupted it's path; yes that becomes complicated. As the PC crowd likes to say "think globally, act locally". I impact those I can personally, then it spreads. I'll stop here before I spew to much in this nice knife forum. I carried one of those hobo knives when i was a scout. My Dad gave it away to a younger scout which is ok with me. I've carried a pocket knife all my life and in school too. No one said anything about it but I never took it out and waved it around. We did have a classmate that brought a straight razor to school and said he was going to use it to defend himself. No one ever paid any attention to him tho. We did not have any rules or laws back then for knives or spoons or forks. We must have been barbarians?

Makes you wonder how we ever survived so long the way we growed up. Shuck we had lead paint, sniffed gasoline and glue, got out butts busted by the principal with a wiffle ball paddle with the holes in it whilst he lifted your feet a couple of inches off the ground. Carried knives to school and had guns in the trucks, played cowboys and indians and our heroes were daniel boone, davy crokett, the lone ranger, george washington, and wild bill hickok. But, you could go anywhere for the most part and play without worry, didn't have childhood obesity, had good morals, believed in God, Family, and country in that order.


But we've really progressed as a society now. Our children don't have to listen to the teacher and if their parents spank them it's a crime. Can't carry a butter knife to school, much less a real pocket knife or even a steak or hobo knife. Kids today take meth, cocaine, and no more about sex at age 6-8 then most 20 year old did back when I was growing up. When kids carry guns to school now it's to get their 15 minutes of fame by shooting a bunch of kids and then themselves. Their heroes are darwin, homosexuals, drug addicted rock stars, and Obama. They don't believe in God, have no family, and despise this country. Need I say more....

It's no wonder this country is in the shape it's in....

Can't say I had a gun in the truck as I did not have a car or truck at all back then but I did have a nice Remington .22 rifle with a clip. We were afraid of some teachers and respected a lot of them. I really don't think I could be a student in school today. I'd probably be a dropout.

In Junior High School I remember bringing in an Arisaka Type 99, complete with bayonet. And that was in the state I grew up in (the people's republic of New Jersey). In High School, I brought a two German Swords to History class (one from WWI, the other WWII with a swastika on the hilt).

After Vietnam, I moved to PA.

Believe me brother, it can be a challenge to be a teacher today, too!

I heard a great story one time at a teacher's meeting I went to. I will re-tell it as I remember it, though this is not a word-for-word re-creation.

It seems this big-time CEO of some ice cream company (ice cream, of all things!) was LECTURING teachers on quality control. One veteran teacher had heard quite enough, stood up, and asked "Mr. So-and-So, your ice cream company prides itself in only delivering the best product possible, correct? Well, what would you do if your suppliers sent you moldy strawberries, soured milk, and stale chocolate?"

"Well, ma'am," replied the well-meaning but totally unaware businessman, "we would immediately return those raw materials as unacceptable!"

The teacher smiled to herself and nodded with a sigh. "Mr. So-and-so, we don't have that luxury. We have to accept every damaged bit of raw material that is sent to us every day. They are called students. Some are damaged by their parents, some are damaged by their friends, some are damaged by the media, and some are just damaged in ways that you and I could never comprehend. And we can't turn them away. The best we can do for some of them is help them avoid further damage and try to heal the damage we can. And every once in a while, we get to teach them a few things."

The businessman cleared his throat and walked off the stage. The veteran teacher was applauded by her fellows.

I tell that story to illustrate a point. Our school systems have to teach down to the "lowest common denominator." Well, pretty soon the lowest common denominator is all we have. And we have to treat every student as if he were a part of the problem, EVEN IF he is an Eagle Scout! I know it is unfair to the good kids, but we have virtually no choice.

There is a kid here who walks down the hallway each and every day, carrying his moto-cross style motorcycle helmet. To me, that helmet is much more of a weapon than an Eagle Scout's camp knife, but nobody has been bashed with it yet. When that does happen, though, I am sure motorcycle helmets will be outlawed next!

I still love my job though ... I like seeing the lights go on above their heads when they learn something from me ...
