All About Pocket Knives

Id like to compile a List of knife makers who used the "USA" (only that, USA) stamp on the tang.
Ill update this top post with the input to consolidate it.
Side note, I heard of a town in Japan or China once that they named USA (without periods) so they could stamp things with it. Unsure on the truth in this.

I heard that same rumor many years ago. I checked Snopes.com just now and they claim it is false.

I like the idea of your list. I believe there was such a list started on this forum months ago. Can't find it now. Maybe someone else can find it.

Also, do you know what the Federal Trade Commission rules are governing listing the country of origin on merchandise? Some seem to put that info on the packaging. With knives. it seems to be on the package or stamped or inked on the knife itself. I have even seen stickers affixed to the blade that can be esily removed (I wonder why).

Apparently, sales publications (knife catalogs) are not regulated. SMKW seems to advertise Made in U.S.A. or Germany, but not other countries. Substitutes like "global" may appear but the the "C" word.

I am would be glad to see such as list as the one you plan.

yeah, smkw will sometimes put "imported" for the chinese brands, but not always.
I just call if I have a question about one, it's toll-free and they are open very late

Their prices and shipping aren't very low, so I only buy from them occasionally.

There are two listings for "USA" in "Blades Guide to Knives & Their Values". They are:

Knives made by Kingston for the U.S. Army

Colonial

These were the only two I could find documented. Hope that helps your search.

I have some knives from Novelty Knife Co. U.S.A. and that is how they are stamped, but I also have some that look idenical and are stamped just U.S.A.
And I also have some stamped Novelty Cutlery Ireland. I think they are all the same, but I could be wrong.

I think this looks more like a Camillus than anything else:

Here is another one. Philco probably knows what it is, but I do not.

That is made by Camillus. Note the spiral punch, thats a sure sign.

I think they are Camillus made for Sears,but some of the experts will come along and would know for sure

Blades Guide to Knives and Their Values agrees with both of you. Made c.1930

The "Made In USA" tang stamp was used on knives made for Sears & Roebuck. There were knives with this tang stamp produced by both Camillus and Ulster. Those made by Camillus had "Sta-Sharp-Sportsman" etched on the blade. Those made by Ulster had "Kingston" etched on the blade. Schrade also made knives for Sears using this tang stamp.
This information taken from "Goin's Encyclopedia Of Cutlery Markings".

Another knife company with USA stamped on tang is McCoy Knife Company out of Mt.Ida, Ar. USA. Great knives!!! check them out!!!!

I have not checked my books yet.....but just in ma mind......im thinkin' and remember reading....knives stamped just "U.S.A" on the main blade tang = SEARS



and thats all i remember..........lol.....and that it was in the smaller book on the shelf if that helps....LMAO

I believe both Federal knife Co and Ideal used only the USA tang stamps at times.

Ideal made advertising knives with and without thier name but all had USA.

I noticed this was a very old thread and in reply to the Japanese USA city and a knife being marked this way is absolutely true as I actually have one but have not listed it because it is way to weird and would cause major confusion on Ebay, if you would like pictures just let me know. I also have a China made knife stamped Official City of the USA and will be happy to upload pictures of this also if you would like. Neither have ever been listed forsale on Ebay.
