All About Pocket Knives

Does anyone know where to obtain Knife Paks - the type that fold up flat and have flaps to cover the knives held in elastic loops?

There used to be a lot of different sizes of these available for various size knives - now all I see for sale are a few sizes that look like thaey have cheap foam interior linings.

I'm looking to buy in some quantity so I would be interested in what is available.

Seems to me the original Knife-Paks were from Star. I don't know if that man is still living, or if Star still exists, or if they still actually make the product.

I have three that I no longer use. Two hold 110 knives, of varying sizes, each, the other 60. The two big ones fold out to four sections, and have two handles that come together when the thing is folded. When closed, they are the size of an attache case.

I stopped using them because the smaller knives were usually laying loose in the bottom of the Knife-Pak when I opened them. I now use knife rolls that I got from SMKW.

It's still difficult to completely contain smaller knives, but with a roll, there is a natural lessening of the potential places for the knives to go. If a roll has insufficient numbers of larger knives, the roll remains small, and the straps do not really cinch it up very well. I added some extra holes to the straps and that problem was solved. A knife roll has to be tightly and compactly rolled and secured to function as it should.

I don't think anyone has really ever improved on the old fashioned knife roll as a means of storing and transporting the items we collect.

Hickory Hill makes a good roll but I am not certain that they make the folding kind. It might be a good place to start looking.
I looked thru the folders I have and only one is labeled. It has a sticker marked KNIFEPAC HOLDS. There is a bar code with the number 0 10847 00012 5.
I have a soft sides zippered one that I like very much and it is labeled RAINE, PO Box 4230, Anderson, in 46013-0230.

Not sure any of that will help but there it is for what it is worth.

Steve, it is hard to find a quality knife pack. I had some years ago that I bought at; Star Wholesale in Knoxville, TN that ran about $50 each in the late 1980's. The only ones I have now are from SMKW; around $20 and come in different sizes. The quality is no where near; the ones that I got from Star; the fold-over flap is a lot thinner. I would like a better quality pack; but these do keep the knives from banging together.

Thanks for your help everyone....Yes Star is the outfit that I remember. I have a few of theirs from years ago and they are good quality. I need to buy a bunch more.

This one pictured by Paul is really for smaller knives. I use them periodically but find myself cutting the dividers between straps for large knives. You can find them in the $12 range.

I bought a lot of 42 knife packs for Blue Ridge in the past. Have many in use that have red felt interiors with no problems. But the last batch I bought were brown felt interior and within a couple of months started turning knives like bad celluloid (only on backside touching the felt). So be careful what you get. BTW, I can sell these brown ones cheap

If you are interested in an Case MM pack (holds 50) or Centennial (holds 100) let me know.

Mike, these are for smaller knives; the one that I am showing has a piece of broken elastic; from putting to large of a knife in it. I would not mind seeing the Case MM myself.

One suggestion I don't hear, but that works for me, at least part of the time, is hard-sided gun cases, particularly the ones designed for four pistols. They have thick foam, which can be cut out with a sharp knife (if you have one ) to accomodate various sizes of knives. Or you can just make slits and tuck them in. Or you can just lay them in loose. The little ones tend to slip around a bit. These cases always have heavy suitcase type latches that accomodate little padlocks or halter snap or whatever. Some of them could be driven over with a car, and nearly all would survive any baggage handler. For what it's worth
