All About Pocket Knives

Do I understand correctly that "Sabre, Diamond Edge, Colonial, Ranger, Schrade, Uncle Henry, Old Timer" (and a few others that I don't remember right now that I think I've seen), are all related to Imperial? Also, I've seen Imperial knives from Providence, Ireland, Japan, and maybe somewhere else. Can some of you guys that are walking knife encyclopedias post a history lesson about Imperial, or tell me where I can read up on it?

Imperial = Imperial Knife Co of Providence RI
Schrade = Schrade Cutlery Co Walden NY
Ulster = Ulster Knife Co, Ellenville NY

All three of the above companies came under the same ownership after WWII. First called Imperial Knife Associated Companies, then Imperial Schrade Corp. Out of business in 2004. Other trademarks they owned and used - Diamond Edge, Hammer Brand, Kingston, Jack Master. Imperial also had a factory in Ireland.


Colonial = Colonial Knife Co of Providence RI - not related to Imperial at all - Trademarks include Old Cutler and Ranger and Anvil Brand. Still in business.

Sabre - brand named used by Cole National of Cleveland who also owned the KABAR and Monarch brands. KABAR was the high grade brand, Monarch the middle and Sabre the low end.

Old Timer and Uncle Henry were also Schrade brands.

I have never seen any Imperial knives marked "Japan". I have seen a very few that were made in Mexico.

Sabre brand knives were made in Japan, although over the years they were also made in Germany, the US, and (last ones) China.
