"New" Cripple Creeks?

So I see one of our members is selling Cripple Creeks but they are being advertised as "This issue of knives revives the famous 3-legged Buffalo shield which was very popular in the 80's. This new issue will be the most collectible, so don't miss out..."

Anyone know anything about these new issues? Who is making them? Is Bob Cargill back in business or did he sell the trademark to Queen or Canal Street?

I think they are made by Great Eastern Cutlery for Smokey Mountain Knife Works. Not 100% certain, but that's my guess.

TY. I see SMKW has one of the new Cripple Creeks but another seller here on AllAboutPocketKnives has 24 of another model. They sure do look GECish so they could definitely be the maker. I am very curious.

George,

The ones already on the market are GEC models; but Queen is scheduled to make several patterns as well. GEC will also have some of their other patterns with the brand. Blue Ridge owns the trademark and are probably partnered with SMKW, as they do many deals together.

The 53 and 53M are the two patterns I have seen thus far. I believe all patterns are going to be produced in 420HC. I think we will see the barlow, scout jack (from GEC), and trapper, gunstock, etc. (from Queen).

Thanks Mike (my #1 GEC model 25 seller :D). Long time no talk!

Great information. I am a CC collector from almost when they first started. I even won a CC award at a knife show way back when. I personally got to know Bob Cargill and his wife June very well over the years but lost touch a long time ago.

I'm going to want a CC Barlow if the price is right ::ds:: The current CCs are a bit pricey.

I guess Bob Cargill sold the rights to the name and logos to Blue Ridge. At least they are not producing the knives in China like the Schrade line.

I read something a few months ago stating Mr. Cargill was making a few knives again so I done a search and found his web site, He is making a few knives under the Cherokee Trace logo, he also has a few prototype's from the old Cripple Creek day's for sale along with a few of his old knife making tools and some misc paper work, very good reading on his web site, check it out

What is the link to the Web Site?

Roger:

You are obviously a Col. Coon type of guy ::ds:: What do you think about the "new" Col. Coons? I know Adrian Harris is making or made some money off the deal but do you like the new logos and the handle materials being used?

Being an old Col. Coon collector myself (met Adrian once at a knife show...his table was three tables away from mine so we got to talk a bit...he wore a Kentucky Colonels outfit the whole 3 days of the show), i find that the new Coons and the old coons are alike in name only. I don;t like the new logo and the handle material used on the new coons was never used by Adrian. He was a big fan of quality sambar stag and jigged cow bone.

George,
I watched the SMKW show Monday night and they had a stag moose Cripple Creek for sale. ($139 plus shipping) They said they had bought the rights to the Cripple Creek brand and later made a vague reference to "those other folks" who had part of the order on the particular knife they were selling. Sounds like Mike and Jim are correct in their assumptions.

Thanks Phill:

Looks like GEC is doing Cripple Creek some justice right down to the shield, acid etch and tang stamps. The only thing I would change is the stag. Bob Cargill used to burn his stag with a propane torch. Don't know his exact technique but the stag turned out with amazing creme to orange brown tones and the recesses went pitch black. Nice contrast..

Gentleman, being a researcher I had to get to the bottom of the this when I learned of it several weeks ago. It is my understanding that no one "purchased" any rights, Mr Cargill was unaware of this until the knives hit the streets.

As far as who owns the Trademark, Let me be your Guide through a US Government website where anyone can Learn the Basic Facts, Research, File or Search for Trademark Ownership - here is the lead page http://www.uspto.gov/main/trademarks.htm

I will direct you deep into this maze to the area where you can Search any Trademark Name that you wish - to learn who owns the Trademark, is it Live or Dead, when it was Applied for, when it was originally Released and then Reapplied for, etc etc. - look here http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?...010:1fus2f.1.1

Once there, choose the Free Form Search (Advanced Search) category - it is best to use BOOLEAN Language when searching for multiple Name Trademarks, i.e. [ Cripple AND Creek AND USA ] - this... dear Gentlemen is the Man or Organization that currently OWNS the Cripple Creek USA Trademark and is the entity who resurrected the Cripple Creek name.

To further stimulate your synapses, you may enter any Cutlery Trademarked term or Name in to the Search box to learn the owership, I think some may be surprised in the results.

Though you are correct re Bob's Stag, the CC knives I have seen made by GEC were all very nicely matched and looked great.

Now, charging $125+ for any knife with 420HC blade steel - none for me Thanks!

Here is a pic of one. The debate on 420HC rages on; meanwhile Buck and Schatt/Morgan sell them like firecrackers.

That is a fine looking knife IMO. ::tu::
Can't say the same for that poor ole three legged buffalo however. Wonder how he lost that other front leg? Looks like he's rubbed all the hair off his rump too. Must have lice.

If the C.C. 420HC is as good as Bucks, the steel will not be a problem.

That's a new steel for GEC. They use 440C stainless on some but that is the first 420HC stainless blades that I can recall seeing on a GEC knife. Looks like a GEC Cuban model but the nail nicks are different. Nice looking knife - thanks for the picture.

They have some GEC 420HC Scouts out on the market; made as an SFO. But all SS knives sold thru their distributors to date have been 440C. The 420HC GEC variants will not have the Cyclops Steel Works stamping. I think BRK/SMKW new that the Queen versions would be 420HC and just wanted everything made of the same steel for marketing simplicity.

I would rather they were 440C, but expect their 420HC is as good as many company's 440C. They seem to have a good source for heat treating the steels they use.

They use the matchstriker pulls on the Bulldog and Schrade variants as well; but haven't used it on their own brands yet. Adds a lot of class in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, the GEC stag is amazing but the Stag Bob Cargill used was treated by him and it was even more amazing.

If in fact Bob lost the rights to the name without compensation that would be very sad.

As to the reason Bob used the 3 legged Buffalo shield was two fold. His love for Native American culture and it's people and probably the main reason, Bob lost one of his legs sometime before he started Cripple Creek Knives. Guess that is why he chose the name Cripple Creek too :)

There are 3 other single blade 73EC trappers they made for a customer that are also made with 440c steel. A couple of them are on ebay now.
