All About Pocket Knives

I picked up this Wolfie barehead 3-3/8" jack at the Mason-Dixon show last weekend.

It's all steel, bolsters, liners, no brass, and with a patina that should make upnorth weep.

I have developed quite a fondness for those little barehead jacks. I've picked up a few myself lately, just not as nice as yours.

Love the jigging on that bone. So is this early or late Wolfie? The pins look newer, but the all steel seems older?????

I haven't been able to date these by the stamps yet David. They're all pretty much alike, except for serifs, or not. At some point I'd like to be able to make a more certain determination by the presence or absense of the " & Co.", which this one has. It is also sans serif, and the pins are spun. I'm also still very much an amature.

Wow, if you could prove a variation of stampings and set a date to it, that would be a huge advancement for collecting of Wolfies for sure. I still haven't seen a pic of that Allentown Cutlery Knife??????

I love those old bareheaded Jacks... I carry one almost everyday, that Voos worked its way into the pocket and won't make room from anything else! lol

Harry R. Mest, 90, of 1500 Lehigh Parkway North, Allentown, died Tuesday in Allentown Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mabel M. (Bauder) Ryback Mest and Mae I. (Keck) Mest. He was a salesman for C.F. Wolfertz & Co., Allentown, for many years before retiring. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Robert R. and Ida (Koch) Mest. He was an Army veteran of World War I. Surviving are a stepdaughter Audrey, wife of Robert Dorney of Allentown; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

I wonder if that's one of their own, the jigging doesn't look quite like the Schrade contracts, and the pinning's a bit different too.

Eric, No, this one isn't Schrade made, but I think it may be a match to a 4 line Camillus I have. Unfortunately all of my knives are still packed and my memory is , well...I'm sure I'm not the only pruner you know.

I am making progress in the "toy room'' though. Saturday I hung a case of autos on the wall and on Sunday painted up a steel box with 6 15"x16" drawers. Just need some tool box drawer liners and time to organize the knives. Today I installed venetian blinds in there and hung the old 1934 school house poster above the knife box.
