Why a stockman pattern # on this Case whittler?

I have a Case 3-backspring whittler - year MCMXCIV (I think that's 1994). But the pattern number is GSC06347. Can someone help me understand why the stockman pattern number on an obvious whittler? Does anyone know what the "GSC" stands for? Also, what kind of jigging pattern is on this one? I will appreciate all your feedback.

It looks like a "5" in the picture but I double-checked it and it is definitely "6347".

Kinda makes you wanna go HUMMM? ::shrug:: I never seen a 347 pattern with 2 clips and a coping. But then again, there is a lot of things I have never seen before, like a Whittler with a 347 pattern # ? ::shrug:: Cool little knife whatever it is.

Those Roman numerals are a clue.
I don't think those handles are really stag. Look like bone to me.
I suspect Jim Parker had a hand in the production of that knife. ::shrug::

This may not be of help, but here is another one, current production, 2006 I think? It's a pocket worn series knife. I really like that blade configuration for whittlin'. Nice knife ::tu::

That is a 47 stockman frame, but Case has offered and continues to offer whittler blade configurations on the 47 frame. It was in the first Case Slect series from 1998 in both green bone and in stag. And they have been in recent Case catalogs in various handles.

Your knife has green secons cut (GSC) bone handles. IIRC, Frost Cutlery had an exclusive on the Roman numeral tang stamping, so that knife may have been an SFO for them.

That was a Frost SFO from 1994, they did a few patterns with that tang stamp. As I recall, that was the first of the "47 Whittlers" that Case did. Can't be 100% sure but that's the first time I've seen a 47 in that configuration Quite a few variations that you see on new Case knives started as SFO's from one of their Distributors.

What is SFO?

I appreciate all the feedback so far. It really is helpful. Sorry for my confusion, but I don't understand what you mean by SFO? Could someone explain what that stands for? Thanks.

SFO stands for Special Factory Order.

Hi All,
I have a set of three of the 47 pattern whittlers made by Case for Frost in 1993 in a very nice walnut case. It is indeed a nice set. Limited to 500 sets. My knives are dated on the tangs using the dot system rather than the Roman numeral system. The pattern numbers are on the small clip blade and are:
DRO6347........ jigged dark red bone
PSO6347........ peachseed jigged dark green bone
SCO6347....... second cut burnt white bone
All three have different jigging patterns. I am not sure if Case made this pattern other than in sets but I think they might have. A friend of mine recently sold one on eBay but I didn't ask him if it was numbered. I like the blade configuration on these. Big clip, small clip, and coping blades are what I like in a whittler. I believe Case's big whittler (80 pattern) had this configuration but only 2 backsprings. It's a shame they don't make it any more.

Hey Miked32,
Your knife has the same jigging as my second cut white bone stag. My certificate of authenticity says that both the second cut bone stag and the peachseed jigging are exclusive to Frost cutlery. By the way the COA also says that 1993 was the first time Case made the 06347 whittler pattern.

It looks to be a 47 pattern frame with whittler blades in it ::shrug::(there was some weird stuff came out of there in those days) The GSC I believe would stand for Green Second Cut Stag.

Guess I should have read the above posts before I chimed in ::dang:: ::dang::

OP from 2009, I think it's a Green Second Cut 0-47 pattern from the '90s. Not an -80 Carpenters Whittler.

I suspect they are calling it a “carpenter’s whittler” because of the coping blade, which is what gives the 80 pattern that name. But you’re right, it’s not an 80 pattern. The 47 frame is probably the most versatile frame of all the Case patterns. Normally thought of as a stockman pattern but it’s been used for numerous other blade combinations over the years, both two and three blade versions. (And I love it that no one seems to have besmirched the two-blade versions by calling them “half- stockmans”). ::facepalm::

Recommend you do an advanced search on ebay for sold listings of the item - that is your best source for current values. ::tu::

Often, the pattern number for a Whittler on the 47 Stockman framed ended in "WH." As in 6347WH. But, given the Green Second Cut (GSC) prefix, perhaps they just ran out of geography.

I enjoyed reading this 16 year old thread on mdr2020's economy Whittler. That's my name for three spring whittlers.

5, by itself, descripes the exterior surface of antler. SC5 is a silce of anter cut off after the top slice. SC5 is usually jigged and dyed to look slightly like it has bark. SC6 is bone jigged and dyed to fake the appearace of SC5. You could call it economy SC5.

I have 47 and 08 three spring Whittlers that I "won" in e-bay auctions that ended in the low 30s but it's been awhile. I never saw an e-bay seller of a 47 or 08 three spring Whittler show a picture of the springs or admit there were three springs in their description. They ony show side views. The pattern number on my three spring 47 ends with WH so the WH does not assure a Case Whittler has two springs seperated by a wedge.
