All About Pocket Knives

I have a CASE XX large congress 5488 with stag handles. Bought it on Ebay 3 or 4 years ago as legit but when it arrived the back handle was not original. Couldn't get the seller to do anything so I was stuck. Now I would like to list it on Ebay. Of course, I would describe the situation and make it very clear that the stag on the back handle is not original. Everything else about the knife is good. I've seen some on this board suggest that tampered knives should be completely taken off the market. Don't want to contribute to the counterfeit problem, but would like to get some of my money back. What do you think?

If you do your part to make the buyer aware of the problem that is all you can do. More than likely somewhere on down the pike someone will sell it as original myabe 2 years maybe 20 years on down the road but after that point there is nothing you can do. Someday you'll be gone and it will hit the market again so I say do your part and make the buyer aware and get some of your money back.

I agree with MM. You can't be held responsible for what someone else does. If you honestly present the knife as a modified knife, that's as much as I think you are obligated to do.
What are you wanting to get out of that knife? I'd kinda like one to put in my pocket if it's not too expensive. PM me if you'd like.

It would seem to me perhaps someone liked the knife enough to have it customized.
If the work is of good quality, as you seem to indicate, I see no problem with advertising it as having been customized with stag handles.

This alerts any buyer who is looking for a stock knife that this is not the knife for him.
It also makes the buyer who likes an unusual knife that this knife is special, and not a run-of-the-mill stock knife.

It is a case of making lemonade from a lemon. Also known as marketing.

It does three things for you:
1- It tells the stock collector that this knife is not stock.
2- It presents your knife in a positive light for the custom knife buyer to consider.
3- It allows you to be honest and upfront about the changes to the knife.

personally, I don't see a problem with listing the knife as it is. Those who don't agree with listing it as such, well,that's their view and that's allright. Just be honest and out front about the handle and you've done all you can do. There will be someone interested that will come along and the handle difference will be of minor issue. It's an otherwise good knife that you should get some of your money back from. Dale

How about a picture??? Are you certain its been re-handled, I've seen very few Case knives with matching stag...even on factory originals.

I haven't seen that type stag that is on the back handle. The front handle is very much like the usa era of stag that Case used..JMO......Tell them your feelings on the knife and you can have a clear conscience about it...

Yes, I am quite confident it is stag.

i would say its still a great looking knife and the handle match is good let me know when you list it i would like to bid if you will ship to canada .

The only thing that really stands out to me is the cut out for the nail nick on the back side. The stag is quite ugly and odd but I've seen worse. The cut out I mentioned is very sloppy and way too big. Otherwise, I wouldn't have noticed. I'd still like to see the knife in hand. If the handle was replaced, other than that one flaw they did a good job. The frame of the knife is most cartainly XX or USA era.
