All About Pocket Knives

ok, my boyfriends bday is coming up and i want to get him a really nice pocket knife, but i dont know anything about them so i need advice!!!!!!!!!!!

What activities does he like? Does he have any knives now?

A pocket knife can be a tool, as well as a nice piece of guy jewelry... ...so tell us a bit more, and I'm sure you'll get some suggestions.

well he hunts and fishes....he has a simple gerber knife now, and i'm wanting a nicer knife to have his name engraved on.....not necessarily one used to filet his fish............

We need to get some opinions from hunters here. I used several knives depending on what I was hunting. I favored a small lockback for small game, as small as 3 inches closed. I used the same knife on Blacktail Deer as they rarely dress out over 110 lbs. I only used that to field dress, I used a larger knife, a Buck Kalinga for skinning. I also used the Buck Kalinga to quarter Mule Deer and Elk, added a hatchet for Bear. I always liked to carry a small folding saw in my pack while hunting, came in very handy. The Kalinga is not a folder however. I know a lot of guys favored a trapper pattern, I found I did not like a 4 1/8 inch but favored a 3 7/8 inch trapper as being more useful. My choice of knife really depends on what I'm hunting. My personal preference is a medium size lockback for all around hunting, but the game is much larger in Utah than California. Good luck, there are a lot of choices out there, need to narrow it down a little more than I did, I was always picky about what I used.

How much do you want to spend would be my 1st question & 2nd question is, do you want him to be able to use it (like for hunting) or pocket carrying (like for a small working knife) that has very "TOO COOL" handles with Jewelry grade Mother of Pearl?

It sounds like you are more in the market for a Sunday Go to meeting knife rather than one to stick in the entrals of a deer or to scale a fish with. Like millions upon millions of people I'm partial to the 54 pattern Case Trapper. Stick some nice fiery Mother of Pearl handles on it, and I'm sure he'll have a piece that he will always treasure! Still not very clear on how much you want to spend or what kind of knife you have in mind, but Schatt and Morgan pocketknives by Queen Cutlery are VERY nice.

I'm partial to the "Railsplitter" pattern myself. It's a hefty handful of pocketknife without feeling like dead weight in the pocket. Very elegant and masculine as well in my opinion.

Edited: If you want to get him something more "tactical" like his Gerber, the AAPK Blades store on this website is about the best in terms of selection as well as price. In terms of brands, Spydercos are among the best and are very reasonably priced for the quality. I'd recommend an Endura 4 or a Delica 4.

haha thanx for all the advice...its a real help!! and if it will help anymore, i'm willing to spend up to $150.......and yes, i'd prefer a really nice one he could carry around, rather than a knife u only use hunting....

It will help to know if this is an everyday carrier or a hunting knife.

It's a little on the large side, but definitely pocketable. I have one myself and it rides very well.

Gosh for $150 there's not much you can't get in terms of production slipjoints. The world is really your oyster.
