All About Pocket Knives

Ok, I just bought a Key Lime Seahorse Whittler for $40.00 at a show this past weekend. I was browsing Ebay this morning and saw this, same knife, buy it now for $145.00??? ... http://cgi.ebay.com/CASE-XX-KEY-LIME-SE ... .m20.l1116 ... It appears to be the exact same model, no extra's, like scrolled bolsters and the like. Either I got one helluva deal or this guys shootin' at stars? I just can't imagine this knife goin' for that amount. Any thoughts on this?

Hey Don, I see that kind of thing on ebay a lot. I don't know if the seller is out of touch or he expects the customer to be?

Yeah, I think yer right TM, he's hoping to hook someone in. I never really go on Ebay, but decided to see what they had in the way of the Seahorses and couldn't believe my eyes! he also has an orange peel SW listed for $145! I wouldn't mind gettin' one of those either, but not fer that price! I really like the pattern too and find myself wanting to collect them more and more.

Don, I think there are some sellers on ebay who operate much like a spider. They wait for someone to blunder into their trap then they pounce.
I've seen listings of Boy Scout knives on ebay that normally sell in the $20 range put up on a buy it now for $100 or more. I just figure they are hoping someone will come along and think they are getting soemthing rare and valuable and be willing to cough up the cash.
I also see some list with a buy it now or best offer. Frequently they will post an inflated buy it now price. I think that is an attempt to entice the potential buyer to make a higher bid than he might otherwise make. And of course, if someone wants to take they buy it now option, they are more than happy to sell at that price. My wife frequents a clothing store that always has everything in the store marked down at least 40% off the price marked......always! Now do you really think they ever sell any of that stuff at full price? That is just a ploy to make folks think they are getting a good buy when they really aren't. Those buy it now/best offer listings operate much the same way.
BTW it is amazing how much money she SAVES at that store.

yep - they're a cool pattern. Really useful, nice size. Fun to whittle with. I would love it if Case would start making 'em in their CV. I'd like a yellow delrin one to go with my other yellow delrin patterns.

Did you ever see Rod Neep's seahorse collection? He had a site up for awhile and had pictures of all of them. Nice collection. I'm not sure if the site is still up. If you google Rod Neep Seahorse Whittler, it'll probably show up. I think his last name is Neep? I'm gonna' see if I can find it.

Well said Phil. I can also see where someone at a quick glance, might transpose the price simply as $45, since $145 is ridiculous, click on it, then it's too late... There sure are some sneaky pete's out there, huh

Don here is a completed sales listing for seahorse whittlers on ebay. There is a wide range on pricing, but I still think the $145 listing was waaaaaaaaay too high!

Rod had a GREAT site on them, unfortunately, he seems to have taken it down a few months ago. I had it bookmarked, and would frequent it. Sad to see it go

I saw your post about the seahorse whittler.

I bought 2 off Ebay, one is the mint green the other is the Autumn brown color : $46 for the mint green which included shipping and the Autumn brown colored one was $51.00 with shipping included.

While Sexton has some nice knives for sale, he usually asks a premium.

I'd say 'ya got some real good prices on those whittlers Dean Yeah, I guess some folks just aim high on their askin' price. As rmfnla said, It pays to shop around.

I am not a Case man. I like carbon steel, but I love Wharncliffe blades, so I traded for a Seahorse whittler and have been surprised with the quality. F&F is good, and the Wharncliffe blade holds a edge OK.

Yeah Dale, I bought one of those chestnut bone Sway Backs along with a red bone Congress that has cv blades I sharpened and use the congress and really like it, I have not sharpened the Sway Back yet. It has a nice f&f to it, but wish it were a little bigger. I think it's 3 1/2" closed? I like the pattern and the chestnut bone handles.

I have noticed that the seahorse pattern is one that Case has consistent good quality with. I have 'bout 5 or 6 of 'em now and all of them have great f&f, and great snap. Yeah, I wish they'd make one with cv blades, but the ss blades on the seahorse are ok, just need to know their limits. Do you think that some patterns Case puts out are heat treated different than other patterns? Or are they just all thrown into the same pot/oven so to speak? I just really like the feel and size of the seahorse as a user I'd really like to see GEC come out with a similar patterned whittler, or a 4" congress

My seahorse is a nice knife, No problem with the F&F, but I would like to see CV blades in one. That is why I bought a Sway Back, to see if the CV was better. I have a farmer jack with CV but so far I have not been super impressed with the edge retention of it.

I don’t know enough about Case to even comment on their heat-treating. I would guess though that the edge geometry & blade shape might necessitate some difference in the heat-treating process.

I got a knife today that is not a whittler, but something a whittler like yourself might like.
I got it on ebay, about $25. I sharpened it and should have waited until my hand was better as I messed up the tip a bit. It is carbon steel, so I am anxious to see how it holds an edge. The handles are nice looking and it has a good feel.

Sounds like a deal fer $25, and looks to be in great shape, I hope it holds a good edge for 'ya. I may need to start checkin' Ebay out some more.
