Brownbag, a 6392 big stockman would not have Stag Handles instead the handle material would be dyed Bone, a pic of the tang stamp on the master blade would help a lot as far as what era it was made, post another pic or two maybe we can help more.

Hope this helps

Based just on the info you give, I would check the saw marks and pin work real good on the handle material. There are a couple of red flags here. How about better pictures so we can better evaluate this knife!

Thanks, The handles look like stag-no saw marks or pic marks. That is what throws me with the tag and all the info saying it should be bone. the shield has no oval. See if this second picture helps. thanks again ,brownbag

Looks like its been rehandled, but would like to see a pic of the other side of the master blade, so we can see the tang stamp.

Thanks
Roger

I've had this knife for approx. 20 years and it was not a traded knife. I just figure that Case was in a transition period and they just had a lillle stag and stuck it on the knife? brownbag

I'm going to get the knife back out and take a bunch of pictures to post. The knife has never been used and is in mint condition, but the tang says bone and the handles are plainly stag??? brownbag

If possible give us some good close up shots of where the stag meets the bolsters(saw marks), the routing around the shield, the handle pins, and bolster pins. The shield you speak of is not the norm for Case knives with stag handles, it was used on synthetic and wood handled knives. Also the only occassion I know of that the number "6" was used on stag was on the wine colored second cut stag in the Case XX U.S.A. era (c-1965-1969). Blade Runner

Hi Brown Bag
Whether it was done years ago or yesterday this knife IMHO has been monkyed with ie, rehandled, wrong shield. The pictures are not too clear but the pins don't even look spun to me and the stag don't look like Case Stag . On top of that the hafting is not right either. I could go on but I think I've made my point.

For what it's worth, I agree with Blade Runner 110%.

Looks to me like this started out as a delrin handled knife and was rehandled at some point with genuine stag scales.

I have to agree with you it doesn't look right. If it was monkeyed with it had to be years ago and before I got it and for the life of me I can't tell you for sure where it came from. Back then I was not aware of any real reason to mess with a knife like this but there may have been. I really don't know but I appreciate all your help. doug ps- maybe someone at Case was having a bad day??

Terrible rehandle job on a delrin 6392. Looks nothing like an authentic Case stag handle job. It was reltively common in the 70's, no collectors wanted delrin knives so many were rehandled in stag usally restamped CASE XX.

Why would Case rehandle their own knives?

And sure...I remember names and phone numbers from 30 years ago, and it would be no problem for me to give them to you so you could call these people out of the blue.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but this type of thing was usually done anonymously by counterfeiters trying to pass the knives off as valuable Case stags. Occasionally it was done by amateur knife tinkerers just to make thier own carry knife a little nicer.
