Can anybody give a plausible explanation as to why the price for an obviously cleaned knife, no etch, with a spey down 10% sold for $700?

I see that the seller says that there is a double stamp on the punch but does that add $550 dollars or more to the value?

That's a real puzzle...not an especially rare pattern. And as you say, cleaned and with blade wear. In my experience, double stamping adds nothing to rarity or value (and may detract). I look at that knife and I would not have expected to get more than $175 or so in that condition. If it was mint with etching maybe 500 to 600.

Could be a case of bidding frenzy.

Yeah, I considered a bidding frenzy, but if you look at the bidding activity there are 4 bidders at $330 and up, normally you see two people going at it when there is irrational bidding and I would definitely consider $330 for this knife irrational.

I'm with you knifeaholic, the double stamp is detracting or neutral, it's not like a coin from the mint, where a double strike actually enhances the value.

I have a feeling that we may see a rash of double stamped knives after this one.

I'd never have the nerves required to shill bid that knife over $150. If I put in a shill bid of $150, I'd be praying like crazy for just one more bid.

I was puzzled too when I saw what it sold for. I think it books for $250-$350.00.

Did you all look at any of his other knives? I liked the NYKC display knife. I have seen then sell higher than his buy it now price. He has some older knives that you don't see to often.

I have been watching this guy for years. I believe he has another user name that he sells his knives under, but cannot remember it right now. I have seen him buy some very rare and collectible parts knives on ebay, then months later they appear in "near mint" condition. They then sell to unknowing bidders for big bucks. It`s one thing to restore an old knife, but to advertise it as original, near mint, mint and untouched? This is where I draw the line. I hope the people paying this guy the big bucks know what they are doing. A buffed/refinished knife should never be worth the same as an original factory finished knife. let alone even more.
