All About Pocket Knives

Who has brass handled vintage knives ?

They go back to at least the 1870's by Coquanoc Works, and were made by Schrade and Remington. Wolfertz is well known for them. Who else made them ? The culerys didn't make cast handles, I wonder who did ?

First is a Wolfertz 3 -3/4''
Second is a Wolfertz 3 - 3/8"
Third is a Remington R219, 3 - 3/4"

Here's a Schrade Cut Co. I know I've got a couple more - - somewhere.

Here's an interesting one; a rase knife, or timber scribe. Made by New York Knife, it is incredibly well fitted.
Blade stamped both sides, like most of the good old knives!

Got one, these Schrades seem pretty popular around here

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the Rem. and the 24 hour delivery time too. Bought it Monday evening, and it was at the P.O. Wednesday morning !

Nice as it is, Eric's Cut Co. looks like it came out the factory door yesterday, just to have it's picture taken !

The Rem, and the Schrades too I believe, have solid handles which are quite heavy. The Wolfertz brass jacks are somewhat hollow. They also have the rim of the easy open cut-out cast into the handles, which allowed the cutler to finish any handle either with or without the EO feature.

In this photo the handle was finished " non-EO ", but you can see the highlite inside the handle which is the top of the opening for it, had it been opened up.

Eric and Fran, you both have some beautiful knives. Those minty ones look like a million bucks!
The brass handles are undoubtedly durable, and I've seen more than one with "tap" marks from pounding on something, but still functional. Try that with bone handles!!
An interesting cutlery concept, and great idea for a thread Fran!

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought I was buying a worn down Hawk, but comparing it to other mint ones to be sure, that's the factory edge! Near mint, IMO!!
I'm starting to get the picture, from catalogs and from knives like this, that a Pruner didn't always have that wide blade you usually see, but there was a lot of call for a more slender, pocketable knife.
Makes me believe that life was simpler and more elegant, back in the day. You cut your own flowers, pruned your own roses, then enjoyed a fine glass of Claret in the garden, before going off to hunt a pheasant for supper!
O.K. it's a stretch , but it's still a cool, thought-provoking knife!

Nice brass bal…. bolsters guys!

I've seen a lot of the English knives, still available, with blades like that called pruners ( alternate definition ). American knives seem to run more towards the ' Hawkbills.'

This looks similar to your knife. From an early 1960s Wostenholm catalogue. Interestingly, the lettering in the catalogue is upside down. All of the knives I have seen are like yours.

I appreciate you putting up that Catalog cut, s-k. It is odd that the lettering is reversed! I've always been of the opinion my knife has it upside down. There is a small percentage of signature-bolstered Case Barlows, that has an "opposite" stamp as well.

Great corkscrew knife. You had to have one to do a little upland shooting!!
