All About Pocket Knives

i just bought a case xx 1978 serpentine jack knife 22087 with the slick black handles and i was looking up the price in my book, jim parkers pocket knife traders price guide and it prices it at 220.00 in mint condition. the other close years such as 1977 and 1979 prices are only listed at 20 or 30.00 and im wondering if this is a misprint in the book or what, so i was wondering if any of you out there that have a recent sargents price book would look it up for me and let me know what it is priced at in that book. i tried to use the price guide for this site, but it doesnt list that year. anyway, its a case xx 1978, 22087 slick black jack. i would appreciate any help.

That is a mispritn, I mean misprint.

That knife is worth maybe $30 max.

is that what sargents price book lists it for? i am just curious, because i have seen other case knives, for instance, the case xx 1978 delrin handle peanut 6220 lists for 45.00 in jim parkers pocket knife traders price guide and then the 1979 delrin handle peanut goes to 90.00 and i didnt know if it may have been the same case with this knife for some reason. is that the price that sargents lists the 1978 22087 at? im just curious.

Sargents book only lists Case knives up to 1970, at least in the 6th edition which is the one that I have.

Trust me, a 1978 22087 is a common knife and not one with a high collector value (the 22087 in general is not a highly sought after pattern).

If the 1979 6220 in delrin books that high, the reason is as follows. Case made the 6220 in delrin through the 70's....incluidng the beginning of 79. Then at some point in 1979 they switched the 6220 to a smooth red bone handle and discontinued the delrin version. There were 9 other patterns that they did this with (5 went to smooth red bone, 5 went to smooth appaloosa bone). That would make the 1979 peanut in delrin relatively rare.....I never would have thought that it was rare enough to be worth $90....but I really don't know. The 6220 is in general a pattern that is sought after by collectors.

youre probably right knifeaholic and i know that the pocket knife traders price guide is most of the time, higher on the prices compared to sargents and some other resources, but up till now i havent found anything in it that came close to being so out of line as what this knife lists for in it, if it is a mistake. thats why i ask, is because ive found most of the time that even tho parkers is a bit higher, that theres usually not that big of difference there.
i know the 22087 isnt a highly sought after pattern as you said, and i dont expect to ever sell it for 220.00, and when i asked the question i was fully expecting to hear what you told me.....that it was a misprint in my book, but i would still like to get a comparison from the most recent sargents book to be sure its a misprint. i know someone out there has the newest version of sargents price guide and i would really appreciate the help.

Well, my Sargents book is the newest version, and it only covers Case knives up to 1970. There are no prices for any Case knives made after 1970, unless I am missing them somehow.

Just to put it in perspective, a mint 22087 with the Case Tested stamp would not bring $220.....maybe $120 to $140 on a good day.

No one would blame you for protecting yourself on the value of a knife you own. My sources of reference don't show it to be a valuable or particularly desireable knife. Put it up for auction if you feel differently...I think you'll find knifeaholic's estimate is spot on.

thanks knifeaholic and bill. i really do appreciate both of your help. i only paid 23.00 for the knife which i still think is a good deal for it, because it is in excellent shape, but i didnt expect to find out that the knife was worth what it books for in my book. i figured it was more than likely a misprint but i had to ask to be sure if it was or not. i just didnt know if there was a reason that it was listed for such a price or if it was indeed a misprint. anyway, thanks again for both of your help.
