All About Pocket Knives

Hello everyone! I have been scouring your forums the past couple of days and I must say that there seem to be a great deal of very intelligent and experienced collectors here.

I’m a Marketing Major at the University of Evansville, and until several days ago have only had a limited interest towards antiques in general.

Recently I stumbled across my grandfather’s pocket knife collection, which had sat unattended since he died in the early 70s and had been given to me by my father several years ago. I opened the cigar box they were being kept in, and couldn’t help but pick up a slightly rusty Remington RB44W. It was love at first sight, and I have since devoted too much time to research about his knives. This site has only worsened my new obsession with pocket knives/knife history/knife restoration.

I look forwards to posting some photos of my favorite ones as soon as they are finally clean. My father is going to help me when I go home for Christmas on some of the worst ones. I’m afraid to do more than patiently rub for fear of damaging any of them, and don’t have any tools here anyways. I'm also going to dig through some books at the library and see what I can find out about each of them. I'm sure if I can't find any particular piece of information someone here will surely be able to advise me.

Go slow on cleaning up your knives. You shouldn't need much more than some mineral oil, a small bottle of Flitz polish, and one of your dad's old tee shirts. 'Ya can't undo over-enthusiasm.

Keep reading about 'em here, after your homework is finished, and post pictures for extra credit.

Sauconian is right. Take your time with a little mineral oil and a soft cloth.........nothing drastic.

Yes post some photos of your knives as they are first. Then later you can post them all purday later (before and after). If you need help with that just ask us. Takeing good photos of knives is not ez. I am still working on this my self.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome As for posting before pictures I will be sure and read up on what people have written so far on photography, though I am not sure how much I want to remember them looking like this! I feel like I’m giving the first one I’m working on more of a super light back rub than a polish, is this correct?

And no I don’t have red hair; it’s more of a brown/auburn/blond messy mix. Perhaps the lifejacket brings out the red?
