All About Pocket Knives

A friend brought this knife over and we are not able to match the numbers on the blade...can this be a fake? Any info would be appreciated, this is a mystery to us.

I'd say it's a 1986. It's a 254 pattern, I don't know what the "E", designates.

what is the handle material? lightning s, 6 dots=1984.

I only count 4 dots . . . . 1986. Scales look like wood.....Rosewood??

I don't think the knife would be valuable enough for anyone to make a fake, but I'm not sure what the "E" stands for either. It is in the position that normally denotes the handle material.

I don't know about the handle. It looks like some sort of laminate. It's got that green on it, I had read somewhere that cow bone was used and dyed? It that true?

1984 earthwood pakkawood. the 54 is used for a lot of special orders and special runs. it is genuine.

E is for earth colored pakkawood. It's a perfectly fine knife.

lol I just read this post and WOW all the answers, and my wife ask thought you knew alot about a knife????? I said I was a knife genus till I joined here now Iam a lil kid in class.... Gotta love the answers you get here at the site. Thanks Fellas!

look at the pic in my post above. i lightened it and there are six.

You have better eyes than I do Jonet143. I can see 2 dots, 2 lightning bolt letter "S", then 2 dots. Not saying your wrong Jonet143 it's just that I need to get my eyes checked I guess.

i should get my eyes fixed. the other pic is much more clear. 4 dot 1986. at least i figured the handle code!

Let me get this straight this is a 1986 earth colored Pakkawood Case Trapper? What is that about being a "special run"? Or is this just an ordinary Case? I have become so interested in this knife, I am trying to get my friend to sell it to me!

rcdryden, it's a 1986 year made knife. I don't know about the special run. I think what Jonet143 was saying was the 54 pattern was used in a lot of special runs and special factory ordered knifes from Case. Jonet can elaborate more on what he was saying. Pakkawood is a pretty common handle material from Case. The letter E in front of the pattern number had me puzzled.

hts covered it well. more 54 pattern knives are used for sprcial runs(christmas, easter, new year, etc.) and special order knives(smkw, sooner state, shepherd hils, etc.) than any other. did not mean to confuse.(especially with my bad eyesight! )

We all overlooked this question.
The answer is yesthey use cow bones a lot as handle material. Case has probably made more knives with bone handles than any other material.

If there are any animal rights folks reading this post, please rest assured they use only the bones from dead cows.
