Happy Holidays Knifer Friends

For our December Christmas drawing. Mike (redrummd) Hoover has donated a super nice Buck 503 Lockback knife that he rehandled with dianosaur bone scales. Mike does very nice work. I'll let the pictures do the talking...

The knife measures 3 7/8" closed. The drawing will be determined on Christmas Evening.

The winner will be determined by the Illinois State Lottery evening pick three drawing on Christmads Day December 25. The Individual closest to the selected number will win. Here are a few shots of the work in progress with a bit of explination from Mike below the pictures...


1) Dinosaur bone slab with scales layout



2) Blanks cut and made for fitting



3) Scales cut to size and the test fitting. Note that the ends are already polished as it isn't possible to polish directly to the metal on knives with thin bolsters. Stone is so much harder than the nickel silver of the bolsters that the bolsters would not survive the grinding and sanding stages.


To put it in perspective each end of the scales has bee through the diamond blade saw; 60 grit sintered diamond grinding wheel; 200 grit sintered grinding wheel; 60, 120, 220, 600, 1200, 3000 and 6000 diamond grit sanding stages and then the 14,000 and 50,000 grit diamond polishing stages.

From the shape & size of the blanks, looks like raybestos
pads for a Fiat 128 would fit poifectly!

Thanks for the nice comments. This knife is intended to be carried and that is why I chose the Buck 503. It is slim and with the dinosaur gem bone scales it is very smooth and easy on the pockets. The gem bone is hard at about 6 - 7 on the MOHS scale so it will be just fine banging around with change or keys in a pocket.

The bolsters protect the gem bone in most drops but a hard drop landing the wrong way on a surface such as concrete wound be tragic. Of course, how often do you really drop a knife like that.
