Attacking Rust?

So, how do you all go about attacking rust?

The one I'm working on right now is an old Camillus I used to carry. The main blade was rusted so bad I couldn't read the tang stamp. I started out with 2000 grit sandpaper and got it down to just a patina with a few minor pits.

Thought about using white vinegar but it can do some really bad things to rusty items ::nod::

Just curious. What few knives I've ever had rust I just either hit with the grinder if real bad or buff it out. Course with the new blasting cabinet I bought this spring it's easier to just blast it away.

Thanks!

Sounds like you have it down pat, I would add a couple drops of oil now and wipe off the excess... Some people don't like to buff, or clean off the patina. Patina adds to the knife. Just my opinion there is another post about cleaning knives you should read it :P talk about mixed thoughts.....
