All About Pocket Knives

I already had the first three, and thought it made a nice display of Barlow variants! Then the One Armed Man Barlow just popped up on A.G.Russell's site ! I couldn't get my credit card out fast enough! Mint but for a little spider web, it's uncarried and unsharpened.
Like most Barlows, KKs came in several blade variations. If you have any Keen Barlows, please post them!!
Some of these are made by Camillus. I'd love to see some earlier ones, and ones made by others!!

OK Charlie, this is not a barlow but it is a Keen Kutter. I think it is from the Walden era but am not sure, maybe someone will help with this. It is etched Keen Kutter and has the faint remains of that darn ink on the back of the main blade. I could not get good pics of the ink or the etch both are faint.

Nice Keen, Mike. With E.C.Simmons in the stamp, it's likely from pre-WWII.

I actually don't know too much about Keen Kutters (I think this is my only one)...
but... its an E. C. Simmons, (built like a tank) and its got a (SHARP!) sabre ground master and the pen blade hasn't seen much use, if any... real similar to a Winchester that I've got... I'll see if I can find better pics, if not, I'll take more/better ones tomorrow in better lighting...

That knife's got me a bit stymied. All the E.O.'s I find with nail nics were celluloid, the ones with straight nics were cocobolo or bone. I may have missed something so I'll look again. What's the length on that one, 3 1/2 or 3 3/8"?

Hi Eric pattern number is 2765BL on back of the main blade. Page 116 of Alvin Sellens book shows the knife with a long pull.

Mike, I can't believe you made me look through every page in the book when you had the model # all the time!

OOPS! My bad, I just enlarged the pic of the pile side and there's the number plain as day!

OK then, other than possibly the illustrators getting things screwed up, the only thing I can think of is perhaps this is a transition piece. That knife is shown as available from 1921-1923 (a very short time period!). Winchester bought Walden(Simmons Hardware cutlery division) out in 1922, and moved all equipment to the Winchester plant in Connecticut. They then began producing Keen Kutters there in 1923. Somewhere along the line the nic was changed, from what to what I don't know. Another possibility is that blades from other models were used if things were running short during the move, and stamped accordingly. These are all just humble guesses on my part, although I definitely think it has something to do with the transition. I'd be curious to see if the nics changed on that bone model below it since that one ran to 1938.

I cleaned up this nice Keen Kutter a little, the handle material is beautiful

Just looking at my sorry attempt at scanning, I went to the Nikon and did some quick photo shop enlarging. The Keen Kutter is marked on both blades with E. C. Simons, and the modle is 07243. I didn't see an exact match in the catalog posted above (thanks for that, it was great) but I'll look for through again with the model number. Any details that can be thrown my way, I love to read it. Thanks Mike

The handles on that knife of yours are very nice. That older bone just has a "look" that can't be easily duplicated. Nice knife.

mint, last book i have was $150. yours, $70? only way to really know would be to see what it sold for, say on ebay.

Thanks, I found it in the posted 1917 cataloge, but the shield is different and that could be just a run they had to make of those knives.....I bought a little coffee can with a slug of pocket knife in it. The 07243 was one of em' and well rusted Winchester, and several others. I haven't even tried to take some of the rust off that Winchester yet....Thanks for the info fellas. I got Colonial that's about the same vintage and I'll post it when I clean up a little more.

The Barlow is a later transition knife.
The TL-29 is probably the prettiest TL-29 I have in my collection.

The Classy KK shield and wood(?) make that TL an eye-catcher! Nice knife Dale. Is that 2006 I see on the Barlow's tang??
