You got it. ' Oute ' like an owl's hoot.

Be a lot more fun if it was pronouced like it was spelled.....when someone asked if you had a knife they could borrow.

I laughed at this post because it reminded me of a story my father told me when I was a young lad. Of course being from Warren County Pennsylvania, the home of Tidioute, I often wondered how it got its name my self. Now my Dad had quite a sense of humor as well.

Being part indian himself he said that the name came from a beautiful Indian maiden that was seen by the first white settles bathing in the Allegheny River that runs through this gorgeous little town.

When they asked her how deep the water was? She stood up and showed them.
Well it was deep enough that only her Tidi 's were out!!!!!!!!

When I first saw it, I had a few ideas of how it might be said 'Tide out'.. 'Te do out'.... and a very fancy french sounding 'Te de ooh ow te'

Guess my sense of humor is more akin to Carvin Don's.

Following is an excerp from my book,

“Tidioute” (pronounced tiddy-oot) is an Iroquois (Seneca) Indian word meaning “protrusion of land.” This area on the Allegheny River makes a sharp bend, creating a near-peninsula within the river valley, where good honest people still reside, and thrive. Tidioute, a quaint little town located in Warren County, Pennsylvania, at first glance it is not really any different then most of the other rural towns in the area.

I still visit regularly and ask for knife info. Every now and then i learn something new. Maybe in a few years I will update my book with this new info. If the Tidioute knife craze continues.

Seems I recall a gag that young lads would do with the Land O Lakes package. Just can't seem to remember how it was done though. Ok I better change the subject

My dad was a character some times.

Hmmm.....My Dad did show me how to flatten a penny or a nail on the trolly tracks...and how to blow a tin can in the air with carbide. And I think somewhere around here I have a little rubber harem girl with a crank underneath that he got at the State Fair, but I don't remember learning anything about butter packages.

Ya can't leave us hangin' like that David ! After 40 years in the construction trades I won't be able to rest until the problem is solved.

How about cutting the top and two sides of the package the indian maid is holding, and leaving the bottom as a hinge. Then....if you carefully calculate two folds of the box so that her knees were to appear behind the hole.. ...Nah..that wouldn't work. An extra pair of knees from another package ? Oh well. I need to go to the store now for some butter for my toast.

Dad's can be fun. I knew I was about to learn something neat if my mother stood there with her hands on her hips and hollered Fran !
I miss my Dad. Maybe I'll invite my grandsons for a sleep-over.
