All About Pocket Knives

I have been trying to buy a Pressbutton knife for awhile but whenever I come across one I don't have the cash at the time. Can anybody relate to that!!!!! Well I finally was able to get one. 3 3/8" closed. It is not perfect but still a nice example. The main balde has some staining and is a loose when open. It opens all the way when the button is pressed. The secondary blade looks better as far as finish goes but does not open without some help and than not all the way. I am still happy with it and was thinking about sending it out to be worked on. What do you all think? Should I leave it or have the work done?

Nice old one, Mike. If I did send it out, I'd want assurance that the patina would be relatively undisturbed. I would probably keep it the way it is. It looks elegantly, its age!!

I understand there will be a lot of autos this weekend, but mostly new I think.

I'd keep it the way it is - after all it's in working condition - don't try to fix it if it isn't broken. It's certainly possible to tighten up a loose blade, but then you have to take the knife apart. There's something to say about vintage knives that haven't been apart or otherwise messed with. Some blade movement on the main blade on used vintage folders are as common as cold beer. Even more common is a 'kickback' or a failure to open completely on the secondary blade.

I only own two Press Button knives and one of them is in pieces at the moment.It is the two bladed one with the gargoyle scales.The whole one is the center point of my entire automatic section.

The,"one-armed man's knife" is truly that:a blade that curves 90 degrees and has a three tined point to use as a fork.The crowning touch is the blade etch;now barely visible:"Compliments of A.A.Marks Newark New Jersey Maker of Artificial Limbs". Apparently this was a giveaway piece;supposedly for returning Spanish American War veterans.The time line is about right(1898) as the company was in business from 1896 to 1904 or thereabouts when it was bought out by Kastor(I believe).

The rest of the knives are from all over the place.

I love that Press Button and to have it with the artificial limb advertising really makes special. Here is another one I just picked up. Not sure of the handles though. They are not marked sterling but they have no dings. Both blades snap out just like they should and are tight.

I don't have many autos, but I am starting to pick up a few.
I got this one at a flea market a couple weeks ago.
I have to make a spring for it.

Ok, here is another Press Button that I got in the mail today. The pearl has a piece missing on both sides but it's pearl on Press Button!!! Do I get it repaired? If I do I might just have the pieces repaired and leave the original pearl remaining or I might just leave it be.

Here are a few pics of several I have . Thankyou for mentioning my book and CD. I have posted some of these before I guess I should take some of some new entrys. I put some pics of the panels for close up, actually these are old shots which are in my CD there are several new ones now in this case but not in these pics. I will try to post some of my newer displays. I have been pretty tied up with several things it looks like the museum may be working out I do not want to elaborate until it is in stone but it looks better than it has for a while still you never know . I hope you like the pics I will try to get some other stuff up to keep from boring people. LT

Here are some knives which I have been lucky enough to have come my way fairly recently. The first pic is of a reproduction edgemaster display board. I got all 6 knives together they are new old stock apparently someone took them off some old candystore boards and just put them away for 50 or 60 years. Since they were all new I decided to make up the board. Notice the large oil stain under knife 4 I did that for realism. Not really I am just not to neat and will have to do the board over. Still it does kind of fit. I added the Shursnap board which is real and from the 40tys for a comparison of the real thing and thought it went along with the post. I also put a couple of pics of the Schrade display case from the 30tys which I picked up in Jersey this summer. I am lucky enough to have a couple of this model and most of the others that were used through the years so I decided that I would use this one for recent automatics. You never know on this stuff what you will come across and lately a lot of fairly rare stuff has come my way. A lot of these were in unused old stock condition and near mint a 2,7/8" gold, a 3,3/8" silver a 2, 7/8" salesmans sample. These came from the same person along with several others . One of the pearls is a 3,3/8" tipper one pearl is a masonic with the emblem embedded in the pearl and the pearl is lightly scrim etched with some masonic wording. Strangly some singles blade 3,3/8 and 3,3/4 also have been showing up this I have found to be a fairly rare pattern suddenly 3 or 4 show up from several sources ( you never know. ). The 6161 lever case in green jigged bone is a model I have sought for over 50 years. It goes pretty well with the 5171 ( stag version ) and big brother the 5172 in the same Case display. The fishtail is a presto and when the fellow handed it to me it was wrapped in tissue I started to rip it open and he said don't you want the wrapper and then i realized it was the original wrapper for care and use it was packed with in the 1940tys I found that amazing this knife is in as close to true mint as any knife I have ever seen. it is pristene. Anyway these are a few of the first recent acquistions ( regarding automatics that I grabbed ). I hope you like the pics and excuse my photography. LT
