A couple of Mallards from a rail museum in England. A mallard broke and holds the world speed record for a steam locomotive. 126 MPH, think about it, a 126 MPH for a steam locomotive, absolutely staggering. Most steam loco's could maintain a top speed of 70 MPH, which in itself is fast, but to nearly double it is mind blowing.

The Dwight Eisenhower loco is actually on display in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and has been a part of a museum there since the 60's. It was sent back to the UK on loan for a special exhibit of all 6 of the remaining Mallards, and then returned to the U.S. I think the photo that Cudgee posted was taken while on the UK exhibit.

I had hopes of getting up to Green Bay and visiting that museum last summer but it didn't work out......maybe 2022.

The tail end of a UP coal train and an older BNSF car, still in BN green.

Old news but new to me. The Illinois Central went out of business and sold to the Canadian National Railroad. The IC took me out of Chicago and delivered me to basic training at Ft.Polk, LA. The entire train was filled with us about to be soldiers. Each of us had our own private compartment. I remember being very impressed with the Army's provision for us. Until we reached Ft.Polk.

Thanks, David. It was fun figuring out how I wanted to do it and then getting things set up. The track the DT&I runs on has sections powered by two different transformers.

Today's Quest to Find a Mallet

I heard the whistle this morning around 7:30, kind of didn't register at first because I had not heard the whistle before. Must have been just the right wind direction and crispness in the air. Got dressed, put wood on the fires, heated my coffee and set out to find 1309.

Got to the WMSR Station, not there. Drove over to the yards in Ridgeley, not there. Decided to drive the back way up towards Frostburg and figured I'd catch her. Around Corgansville, I passed Cash Valley Road and did see smoke coming up through the trees to the left, but figured I already missed her where the tracks cross the road.

Then I decided to press on to the depot at Frostburg. Arrived around 8:40 and started walking the Rail Trail down towards Cumberland figuring I would eventually see her coming up the mountain. Walked around 2 miles East, no sighting of smoke in the distance or sound. Waited for a bit and decided to walk back to the depot (it was pretty chilly and windy).

Waited there for several minutes, not a person around, figured I'd drive back down towards Cumberland and eventually see smoke in the distance. Nothing. Not at the station either, returned back to the farm figuring today was just not the day.

But others obviously had better luck today-






I did take some pictures at the depot while I was there. The CN track mobile was resting off rail next to the turntable. That would be a fun thing to ride in.

That's my youngest sister's dog, Barney. He's very well behaved. Now my other sister has two hell-hounds, one of which wore up 3 sets of brand new blinds, among other things. One is a terrible counter surfer, eats wrapper and all. They even did 3 months in obedience school and they're still bad.
