Ya know, axes ued to be everywhere around here, hatchets too. But they are becoming harder to find. I live in logging country, youd think thed be thick. I attend a lot of farm auctions not that many lately I guess. But Im on the hunt BIG time now! The Amish dont want to sell theirs so I just bring em home and hone em up, rehandle some and , thats all I get out of them. other than ogling them for a few days!

I got this from a guy at the Flea Market. I asked him if he had any axes and he said "I got one in the truck, but the handle is messed up" I said well can I see it? He got it out of the truck and handed it to me and I asked, "How Much", He said "Just take it and I'll be rid of it". I said

...

OK.. are you sure? Thanks man!!!"

Scott, I think the eye ridges were a True Temper feature. I have a limbing axe and hatchet with 4 ridges each.
Some mfgrs went through a phase where they didn’t stamp their heads, but paper labeled them. Obviously, the labels didn’t survive years of use.

Here are the latest pick-ups. I found a Kelly Ax from the Charleston, West Virginia factory. Kelly moved in 1904 when they again relocated, that time to Charleston, West Virginia. The factory remained there until 1930. So, the ax is 1904-30 vintage. Also, a Barco, which is also technically a "Kelly" ax.
Barco Industries is reported to have been established in 1983. In 1987 they purchased the Kelly Axe Making division from the Ludlum Corporation. The transaction provided Barco with the patents, trademarks and patterns originally owned by the Kelly Axe Co.,
The Kelly Axe Co. became a division of the True Temper Corporation after the American Fork & Hoe Co. had completely adopted the True Temper name in 1948. Some other brands previously used by other companies have reportedly been made by Barco but that has not been corroborated nor is the extent of the brand use been determined.
Ludlum Corp. had purchased True Temper, along with the axe making division, and all the assets in 1960. They continued to manufacture some of the products associated with True Temper, including some axes, but the details are sketchy.

You and Scott have all the luck with axes and hatchets! I'm starting to wonder if demand for them tends to be lower in the warmer parts of the country?

I think that might be true Dan,

but there are several collectors here in my town and axes don't last long if collectible or priced cheap. I got beat out of three axes last weekend. At an "antique junk" show a guy usually holds them for me and I walked up to his table and he said "I just sold my three axes to a guy, I didn't know if you would show up today or not"

Needless to say I wasn't too happy about it.

On the bright side, I scored big last weekend,

so it is a matter of Ying and Yang, I reckon...
