I sure hope I can keep it up. I've been very fortunate as a relatively new collector so far.
Chevy I hope I did not cause you any distress thinking your knife was rehandled. I would give much more weight to what kootenay joe and peanut740 say than myself.

It is important to not 'over-read' a knife. Knife factories were not trying to make every knife exactly identical so that collectors could closely examine many examples and find everything exactly the same. They were making tools to be used and there is some variation in blades, handle covers, tang markings, etc.
And just finding one aspect that 'does not seem right', should arise suspicion but it is likely not enough to make definite conclusions. But, if you find 2 or more 'not right' features then a re-work is quite likely.
Buffed knives do not 'read' properly as evidence of tampering might have been removed.

I've seen a few like this as far as the handles, I do realize it has been cleaned though! Too bad it doesn't have the old finish on it! Thanks for the advice!

Chevy my original comment about the handles favoring a HW rehandle should be taken as just that. A comment, for I am in no shape form or fashion an expert on Schrade, So if I put a doubt in your mind I am sorry. Roland and Roger are qualified to make an assessment.

I'm just here for the fellowship and to see all these great wonderful knives, I'm a young collector so I am all ears! Though I'm sharp on what I do know I dont know half as much as you veterans!

Johnny, that is an awesome find. Good thing about schrade collecting is they are all great knives. That 2ot is special because of its rareity do your doin good right out the gate. I happen to like craftsman knives made by schrade. So when I had an opportunity to grab this 2ot I jumped on it. Has a light scratch on the master and the finish on the pen blade looks funky. All and all it looks like some one used it just enough to screw it up. But i believe it is factory sharp from what I can tell. I often wonder how many they made with the craftsmen shield??

That's a very nice 2ot. I have seen a couple of the craftsman ones and I believe they are even more rare than the standard 2ot. It looks to me like someone who was not so adept sharpened the blades at too low of an angle and scuffed them up. Looks to be a medium to fine stone, a coarse one would have more deep scratching than the smudgy look that it has, except near the middle of the clip blade, those scratches are more coarse.

Thanks Paul, the knife actually looks better in person. I guess maybe it's not a factory edge. Pretty sturdy knife though. I'm going to have to leave it at that for 2ot's. So many schrade patterns still on the list.

Very nice knives posted on this thread. I have not posted here before because I am not really a Schrade collector. But I recently got this 804. I have a couple of other 804s with Delrin handles. This one has bone (I think). I am pretty sure I have seen an 804 with this handle material posted somewhere, but I have not been able to find the posts that I think I remember. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I am wondering if it was made in a particular time frame or just contemporary with the Delrin covers.

Mel, so terribly, terribly difficult to judge from a picture BUT judging from the appearance of the handle down by the cap bolster (smooth part) and what I see that looks like Delrin haze in the bottoms of the jigging, I'm going to opine with reservations that the handles are not bone. Get some good magnification and take a look.
Less than two bucks out of China on eBay --->

No problem.

Mel I think it is bone. What Jerry says about bone and delrin is correct and I'm not going to pretend like I know more than an old marine

I think its bone because it's missing a telltale sign of schrade delrin and that is the little perfectly symmetrical lines in the pits of the jigging. Some of the later reddish bone schrade used is very tricky, I think your knife is one of those.
Here's some schrade delrin for reference.

I highly recommend that little jewel. It is invaluable. You might as well get six because you can't replace the batteries for what they cost!

Thanks for the responses, fellows. I do have several magnifiers, though not the one Jerry posted. Those are some knice looking Schrades you posted for comparison, Paul. I like to think that I can distinguish bone from Delrin, but this knife has me questioning my ability. In the close up photo you can see pores which make me think bone.

It is absolutely bone. Really nice knife, and pretty elusive in bone

I too like to think I can tell the difference but every now and then (such as in this case) I need some help.

I have a few Delrin handled Schrades with the parallel lines in the bottom of the jigging, same as yours. I never realized that was found only in Delrin, but now that you bring it to my attention I have never seen that jigging on a bone handle. Thanks for pointing that out.

The material and jigging are obviously different from my other 804s and Craftsman clones: I wanted a second opinion about the material. Some bone is a lot harder to be sure of than others, at least for me, and this is one of them.

I wouldn't count on that being bone until I had looked at it with the 45x scope!

You have almost convinced me ... I have always loved microscopes and telescopes, magnifiers and binoculars ... plenty of all of those around this house so why not one more!

Mel they are so doggone cheap What have you got to lose. You will be astounded at the detail it shows on bone and horn handles . Even my $65 USB microscope doesn't show the detail this little booger does.

How well does it show the details of a sharpened edge? It would be very interesting to see the effects of different grits and polished edges up close.

I've never looked at an edge with it Paul but for $1.65 with free shipping you can't go wrong.
