All About Pocket Knives

Thanks for your reply. I am not familiar with those makers or for that matter, many custom makers. I became familiar with Rudy Ruana's knives even as a youth, living in Montana at the time and developed a love for them. I now own an embarrassing large quantity of Ruana and Hangas knives but I am feeling good about it. I have a Josh Fisher fighter. Other than that I have some 1920s and early 1930 Remingtons that I love, and am entertaining the possiblity of getting one of Bark River's higher end models. Right now the dentist owns me. I have possibly the second nicest collection of Schrade 165 pattern fixed blades around. Pretty plain stuff but very functional.

Spent about a half hour chopping branches 1-4 inches thick, some dry, some green. The Becker is better than a hatchet IMHO, almost as good as a tomahawk or small axe. Devastated 3 inch branches like the one below with 7-8 chops. The inch stuff took one or two chops. Bites in deep. Splits great too. After a half hour of that, no fatigue, comfortable grip, easy to use, could do it all day. Still hair shaving sharp as it was out the box. Sweet chopper and great knife all around.

Nice job on the Becker Ivoryman, and a pleasure to operate it sounds like.

Nice Tank - that handle really sets off the knife - I'd have never guessed that a mixture of handle materials could end up looking so good! OH

Gee gmusic, those two are beauties. Does the tang say MUSICMADE? Does that mean you forged and stamped and ground and scaled? Very nice, looks like very cool Buffalo horn too maybe? That's a cool pair.

Squatch, I have one of those Roach Belllys, have had it for a few years now, very useful little knife. Mine lives in the kitchen and makes a great utility knife. Also travels real well due to it's light weight and small size. I think you will end up liking it...

These knives of late are from bar stock Ivoryman. I normalize, grind, heat treat, handle and all of that stuff. Make the sheaths now too. I haven't forged a blade in months since I started doing this stock removal. I have a forged 52100 Bowie laying on the bench I have yet to finish, I can't decide how to dress him up.

Looking good gmusic, thought they were factory finished products until I made out the tang stamp. Very impressive that you do all that yourself. They look Professional, high quality control, great design and execution. Look better than some of the stuff knife companies put out. Top notch. Where do you get raw Buffalo horn?

Thanks Ivoryman. I'm getting better with these grinds all the time, practice, practice! The horn I get from a couple of different sources, I think those particular ones came from a guy on eBay. Origindia I believe he goes by.

Nice little Schrade 152. Processed my very first deer with one of those.

Ivoryman: I found I didn't really have a need for the Brute because of its weight and passed it on to a friend.
I wonder if it is still being made.

For me the stars are the BK5 and the Becker/Reinhardt kukri. A pleasure to use these.

Ivoryman: Ageed, it is excellent for batoning. I think this would be ideal if one had a semi-permanent camp site.

Speaking of the baton, I finally batoned with the BK9 recently. The log with the six inch ruler on it was very knotty, had to get medieval on it, bent the blade about five degrees out of straight while it was in the knotty end of the log. Once through it was back to straight, and performed better than expected. I like it better than a hatchet or small axe. Fun too. Then it peeled off a few feather sticks and is still shaving hair after never having been sharpened since it came out the box, and after a few hours of use. Better knife than I expected.

Jusst finished this one up for our local Pheasants Forever banquet. It is Rob Thomas typhoon stainless steel Damascus and ivory handle with mosaic pins and hand stitched leather sheath. Took me about 2 weeks to complete, of course that is not working on it non stop. Terry
