Lee, The bird hook has a long shaft for reaching into the birds cavity. Button hooks typically have a short shaft, the length of a pen blade.

Thanks Dan, Dimitri Lee, Bill, Roger and Barry. It was super stiff opening everything but they are starting to loosen up a bit.

The knife itself isn't that rare, but with "St.Louis World's Fair"etch,I'm guessing there ain't too many floating around.

Nice Bill

... I do believe it is horn

...
Side note - Interestingly I have recently read about blond tortoise shell (from the underbelly shell of a tortoise) but have never seen a knife handle use it - that would be the only other thing those handles could be but again never have seen it used and only bringing up blond tortoise shell as an aside... I truly doubt this handle is blond tortoise and would bet the house on horn

That is a beautiful little knife, Bill.
Looks like the bolsters took a little rubbing; Glad they left that blade alone.

I really like splotchy character in a scale and the horn does that. I like the colors too, reminds me of Apaloosa bone, and a cool looking knife. Congrats.

Thanks Dimitri, I really like the handles. I have a George Woodhead with very similar handles, they just have that old look.
