Doglegg, Knifeslinger,

Yes, he is a big baby.....until the door bell rings. Then he goes into full Chuck Norris / Rambo mode.

Here’s mine, Hammy and Bucket, in their outdoor gear. I walk in state forests a lot and don’t want to get shot during hunting season. Also, the boots are a necessity not because I’m some weirdo. She’s got some kind of autoimmune disease and her paws never fully callus and get blisters on a regular basis. We could pay for a drug that would fix it but it cost nearly $300 per month. Boots are cheaper and work well.

If you are a pet lover/caretaker you are familiar with the many added costs pertaining to your pets in addition to their diet, license and shots, many of these additional costs are simply optional and not necessary, such as:
Pet Medical & Health Insurance.
Pet Cemeteries. (In California, Pet Cemetery burial and or cremation can cost upward of $4,000.00). You can add an additional few hundred dollors for a Tombstone and maintenance of the burial site.
Last week I received the below advertisement in my mailbox.
(Dog DNA Test) ::uc::
Yes, it's for real. I looked up the website listed on the literature, $199.00 for your dog. But wait, there's more. 3 Dogs for $449.00 at Amazon.
Our German Shepperd is from Germany. (Test not required)
You can receive a "Basic" human DNA test for $69.00 through "Family Tree Magazine" via numerous DNA testing services.
What are your thoughts on "Pet" DNA tests?

"What are your thoughts on "Pet" DNA tests?"

So far I have not reached that point where I've ended up with more money than I know what to do with, so I think I'll hold off on ordering up the pet DNA tests. I've got three dogs, all of which are stray mutts that showed up here after being abandoned along the roadside. None of them are candidates for breeding stock so their DNA information is of no value to me whatsoever. My money would be much better spent on another box of Milk Bones. ::nod::

Philco, if I had a few bucks to blow I like to send a DNA sample from this one to one of the labs that does the human DNA tests. We have heard so many folks report on the ridiculous results that even siblings have received. This one thinks she is human:

A year or two back a dog magazine sent off the same DNA to different labs. There were significant differences between the results. Perhaps dog DNA testing has become more precise since then. Perhaps not. At least we know that all dogs descended from the wolf. Hard to believe looking at a Chihuahua.

My nephew has a rescue he got as a puppy from the local SPCA. Cute puppy but turned out to be the ugliest dog I've ever seen (and wierd behavior too), so lots of speculation regarding what breeds are in its ancestry. When the veterinarian was asked for his opinion he declined to guess and said a DNA test would tell. So it's more breed determination than country of origin. In this case, no one thought it worth paying to find out.

I don't have one but will see if I can get one, or take one next time I see him. My guess is it's a Boxer mix. Others say Pit Bull mix. The ugly part is it has an arched "hunchback", sorta like a cat when it's frightened. But with this dog it's that way all the time, gives the impression like its walking on tiptoes. ::shrug::

Treefarmer, Your dog's head and markings are very close to an English Setter. At least that was my first thought.

Greg, apparently you don't have a Dachshund in the house. :)
QS and Steve, sorry for not responding to your comments about Miss Joy's dog. She is a "Aussiedor", her mother is a red merle Australian Shepard and her father is a Chocolate Labrador Retriever. Flossie is her name, she looks like a pile of leaves and she adores her mistress.

This is Delilah, a mix my son’s family has adopted. Massively muscled dog, weighs about fifty pounds and as sweet a dog as you’d ever want to meet.

Charlie, that is a smiley dog! Lovely! She looks like what we would consider a pit bull. Dunno what she actually is.
Funny thing. We owned a German Shepherd and s Rottweiler and I’ve had a pit where I live now and known several others. They all had one thing in common. They were very nice dogs. Actually, the Rottie used to get beat up by kittens.

Delilah definitely has some Pit Bull in her, as does their other female mix, Harley, who is about the same size, but slimmer features. She's black, white and brown.

The two get along great, but there is a great deal of competing for attention and possession of chew bones and tennis balls.

They both like me overly much and a hundred to hundred and ten pounds of squirming dog in my lap is uncomfortable.

Our Labrador, Gracie, was a faithful friend and companion. One of the most sweet and gentle creatures God ever created - the only time I ever even heard her growl was when there was a coyote or stray dog around. Gracie rode along or followed me everywhere she could. If I did not confine her, or drive off the ranch property without her, she was right there with me. When I returned she was the first to run out and greet me. She was just happy being where I was, watching whatever I was doing ("supervising" my wife said). In the evenings she sat beside my chair - I couldn't even make a trip to the kitchen or the bathroom without her escort. My wife always laughingly said there was no doubt who Gracie worshiped.

In the current (January/February 2019) issue of Ducks Unlimited magazine is an article by Doug Larsen titled "The Contract". Larsen says:
We enter into a difficult contract when we pick up our new puppy. We know we are signing up to get our hearts broken in 10, or if we are lucky, perhaps 15 years.
For me that day has come again. Gracie was diagnosed recently with cancer. She had a large inoperable tumor on her liver. As her liver failed she accumulated fluid in her abdomen, began to tire quickly and had trouble breathing. Through it all she remained alert and tried her best to keep up with me as she had always done. A lot slower to get where I was, but eventually always there. Her days as a hunting companion and gundog ended several years ago when she began to have difficulty getting into, and out of places hunting dogs need to go.

Two days ago I had been working in the shop until near dark. When I left the shop to put up the chickens and walk to the house she was there. When I got to the house it was dark. Normally Gracie would have been right with me to go into the house, but she was nowhere to be found. I called her. She did not come. Retracing my steps I found her lying under a cedar tree between the shop and the chicken house. She just was too tired to go on. I got her up and back into the house. Yesterday we took her to the vet again. Nothing more to be done for her and not wanting her to suffer (or fall victim to coyotes), we made that difficult decision. She would have been 14 years old this summer.

She's now retrieving ducks, and waiting for me. I don't know if there are dogs in heaven - I prefer to think there are. I hope to see Gracie again some day.

Sorry for your loss Ken. She's a beautiful pup (I don't care how old a pup is, they're a pup 'till they pass).

Ken, you said you don't know if she'll be in heaven, but I found and hold onto this about our sheltie Rio.

The Holy Spirit is giving John a glimpse of the Throne Room of Heaven, and he writes in Revelation 5:13 New King James Version (NKJV)...

13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:

“Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

Not only are our pets (every creature) in heaven, but we'll be able to understand them!

Could I be true? I certainly pray it is!!

I hope so too, couple dogs that I really miss. After putting one down the vet sent me a card saying after I cross the rainbow bridge they will be waiting there to greet me. I really hope so!
