I picked this up the other day a flea market. I hate it when people try and "fix up" an Axe and end up messing it up like this guy did by trying to take the rust off with a grinder then badly fitting the wrong type of handle to it...

I think he should have to keep it and use it, a fitting punishment.

I'm with ya on that. I hate when they say, "Restored", then they polish it like a piece of chrome. I think by definition restored means returned to original condition. I like that Collins Genuine Hickory. I have a nice double with that lettering.

Actually, you could take a flap disc on a die grinder and polish all those divots out. It would look like a polished piece of chrome, and then blue or brown it. I found a little Plumb boys axe head that looked like a solid chunk of rust. Not particularly liking the polished effect, I browned mine. it was pretty easy and looked good. I posted pics of that one a couple years ago. I made the handle out of a piece of Ash firewood. It turned out nice and throws well.

I like to give it a patina with vinegar or even Coca-Cola but your finish looks good on that plumb.

I bought this on a hunch that it was made in Sweden, too much rust and gunk on it to know for sure, but the blue paint gives me hope!

Rich, I understand all the paint colors turn blue there in winter from the cold. It’ll turn pink again when it gets to AZ.

As far as bad news goes, it is getting harder and harder for me to find any axes out there in all my old fishing spots... so to speak. When I go out hunting I ask around and if they had any they have always already been sold. Or the prices being asked for a rusty old beat-up axe with chipped edges makes me set the axe back down and move on down the line.

Hey, Rich. The yard sale and swap meet season is only in the summer here, and snow this week means summer is officially over. So now I’m down to looking in thrift and antique stores (there’s a good one about 40 miles away, and another about 85 miles. A few dubious ones closer). I stop by when I’m passing through those towns.

I don’t surf Feebay or shop online (except from you), but a friend of mine does a lot, and occasionally he sends me a link to something I might like. If I like it enough, he bids on it for me. I sharpen his dull stuff in return.

But I have more shop time in winter, and a pile of candidates. Several each of lath and rigging hatchets, a couple TT double bits with eye ridges, couple more hatcheroons to make from scratch, and lots of chisels and small tools. Plus getting my smithy shed set back up. Come spring, I’m gonna be desperate to go back to work, just to get some rest!

I’m mostly just a user, not a collector. So the used-up ones the sellers are too proud of, I just let ‘em go.

I am a user also, but I mostly like the "hunting" for them and then cleaning them up and making them usable again. The winter here is pretty short so not a lot of wood goes in the fireplace like others I know just a few hours north of here. I do sure like going by a yard sale and finding a good ol' USA made one for a $1.00. That is a good day .....of course there have not been too many good days like that for quite a while...

But better days are coming, right?

The system was operated by various companies under the names Southern Pacific Railroad, Southern Pacific Company and Southern Pacific Transportation Company.

I vote for the Southern Pacific. I was at a farm auction in PA, bidding on a Poulan Super 68 chainsaw with a 31" bar. Back when Poulan made absolute top shelf saws. Over leaning on a tree were several axes. One was a PA Rail Road, with the PRR Keystone logo. It's one of my favorites.

Oh I like that PRR Keystone logo! Very hard to find down here. I just picked up some old sledge hammers, R.R. spike hammers and picks VERY rusty, but might be some RR pieces in there... so I hope

The bad side of having swap meet weather all year is that you end up with WAY TOO MUCH JUNK... if you lack self control... and apparently ... I lack self control...

Think it's a No 6 and the Hatchet is well .....just a hatchet I think ?

I don't know much about the Elwells axes, you don't see a lot of them out West where I am. It is an old brand and excellent quality from what I have read.

Edward Elwell started at Wednesbury Forge in Staffordshire in 1817, and stopped around 1930 I think, when it merged with Chillington Tool company. Eventually taken over by Spear and Jackson.

That being said you have a great piece of history!
