All About Pocket Knives

Beautiful batch of lobsters, bladecollectorr!
Lovely collection of pearly knives, Jacknifeben!

I picked up this nice MOP Congress at our local flea market today for a few bucks. It has 4 blades and is 2 7/8" overall with rat tail bolsters. The tang stamp is Gladstone Cutlery Co Germany. There is nothing in my older Goins or other books I have mentioning Gladstone. Am I correct in calling this a Congress?

Nice, OC! Looks like a well made knife. I can't locate a single Gladstone folder, from Germany, on Ebay...for sale or sold. Love the master blade on that!

Are you familiar with the name Gladstone? Could this possibly be one of the pre WWI imports from Germany before all that was ended?

No, OLDE CUTLER, sorry, I'm not familiar with that stamp at all.
I could be convinced, though, that that is an early knife.

Really enjoyed seeing everyone's pics on this thread. Pearl knives seem to always stand out within any collection. I only have a few so far..

Wonderful collection of MOP folders

Hello, new member here, and I am just learning how to tell a penknife from a citrus knife from a whatever... I have an interesting pre-1920 WR Case & Sons MOP knife, engraved "Dr. G.M. Edwards." It is stamped on the tang of the smaller of the two minor blades. It looks a bit unusual to me with the stamp location and the two pin construction at one end. It is in rough shape, with MOP loss to both sides along the liner edges and the back handle has a tight crack and loss to the right corner next to the bolster. Much darkening, discoloration, wear and pitting to the blades and liners. I'm hoping someone can identify the pattern name or number and a rough value estimate. I don't think it's worth much with the condition issues, but what do I know? I was planning on including it in a murderous doll auction on eBay. Thank you for any knowledge you can share!

This arrived recently in a group of pocket knives that I bought. This particular pocket knife was NOT the target of my purchase. It is a ROSTFREI - INOX, two blades, 2 11/16" closed, one tang stamp, pocket knife. Except for a few, very tiny cracks in the handles, it is in decent shape. It needed very little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

Its the first one that I've ever came across that has a shield on both sides.

Houston Price lists Gladstone but no further info. Nice knife. J.O'.

I just started cleaning up old knives, prompted by helping clear out a relative's life time of clutter.

I thought this was a junk knife with plastic scales when it was given to me by a family member. (Is 'scales' a knife term?) It sat on the 'miscellaneous' shelf of my workshop for a few years. I finally opened a blade and realized it was well made, but highly degraded, perhaps ignored since the MOP cracked and chipped. 2 5/8" long, exclusive of brass loop and split ring. It could serve as a flashy anchor for your watch or key chain.
Boker was proud enough when they made it. Three blades have the cutler's name and at least seven have the tree branding, including all five edged blades and the two pointy tools.

Is what I think of as a 'pin awl' meant as a pipe stem cleaner? Does what I think of as a long manicure tool/file with a crab claw tip have a standard name? What do I do with the hook? Button my shoes?

I am not sure how to proceed further with clean up. There is enough knife here that I can dink with it for a long time. Too weird and rare for EDC, unless I start wearing a vest and watch chain.

Nice knife John! Usually I try 0000 steel wool, an eraser will remove rust if it’s not to bad, and mothers mag polish, glitz or semi- chrome. That won’t remove the patina usually, but will make it look better.Thanks for sharing it with us and welcome to AAPK
