Hi there. Obviously the more knowledgeable folks here agree this is a trapper. I'm newer here. I thought it needed a spey to be a trapper or it's just a dog leg jack. Maybe someone will let me know what makes it a trapper? Is it just the shape of the pattern? Thank you.

My knife on top in the picture is a trapper and has a clip in front and a spey in back. Ka-Bar.
I wonder if the one you're referring to is an English jack?

Bottom knife in the picture is a dogleg jack. Schrade Hammer Brand.

That's actually what would be considered a serpentine jack. A dogleg would curve down at the butt end like FRJ's knife in the photo above. His other knife is what would officially be considered a trapper but lots of folks lump all the blade configurations in that handle pattern as trappers. I agree it does make things confusing. Giving patterns names (trappers, whittlers, etc) is actually a kind of a new thing. A hundred years ago the knife patterns had more generic names, like the serpentine jack, so that different blade configurations wouldn't cause confusion as they do now. With that being said, the long clip on those knives is what makes the knife shine as a skinning knife, so regardless of the secondary blade they all work well as trappers.

I think, since we have been "collecting" knives in that last 100 years we have had a need to be descriptive and became our own worst enemy.
It's not so bad. We all seem to get through it.
