I also picked up a Pennsylvania RR GG-1 unit and some rolling stock for the layout, should be delivered Friday.

MEDITATING & REFLECTING IN A FREIGHT YARD

Up till about 2015 I worked in the New Haven, CT area. Lots of times many days were stressful. Lots of folks would leave the office at the end of the day and hit the bars.

I would go to the Cedar Hill Yards and train watch and think about my day and meditate to calm down and watch freight cars switching and reflect on my actions during the day and watch the locomotives shunt about and smoke a cigar and follow the conductor hopping all over the place.....then go home, in a more peaceful state of mind.

CSX obtained the yard in 1999. I would park to the left of the building on the left in the picture. It was a parking lot for Raymour & Flanagan furniture company. In the 1950s, when the New Haven RR owned the yard, it was electrified and up to 2000 cars a day could go through the yard sometimes. When the weather was warmer, parents or grandparents would bring the kids and everyone would sit on lawn chairs watching the free show!

Below is an old picture of the yard when Penn Central owned it. 1969. I pulled it off Google Images. The tower is still there.

Railroading in this area has always been uber complicated to say the least. When I was train watching, the yard was maybe 25-35% of what it used to be. The peak was 1958 under the New Haven RR. That was 3000+ car EACH DAY!!!

CSX plus two regional freight lines share the yard. A new terminal has been built and one of the regional RRs built a new line to New Haven harbor. It was Penn Central, who did not want to have anything to do with the New Haven RR but was forced by the govt, that allowed the yard to disintegrate. They took it over in 1969, went bankrupt the next year (blaming the New Haven RR as a burden) and limped along until 1976 when Conrail came in and didn't know what to do with it.

But train watching there was a pleasure, especially watching the grandparents bring the kids to watch on warm days. Most memorable views where when the circus train pulled in and parked for days (Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey).

I saw that circus train parked at Alexandria Union Station once, kick myself for not taking pictures of it. And the circus is no more.

Never had any turtle soup before but speaking of turtles, I ran across bog turtles on TV the other day. Cute little guys. Can also be found in north eastern MD. Just thought I'd mention it. Interesting critters.

The 847 Norfolk Southern double stack went by yesterday but wasnt where I could get a pic of it. Dont see to many NS units on the point go through here.

Opposite situation here, BNSF is a rarity, but I do see one from time to time. Same with UP.
