A young porky who I spooked up a tree when I got to my sit for deer hunting. He didn't realize it in the dark, but he "escaped" up into a broken-off pine about ten feet tall. After daylight, he grudgingly came down and shuffled off. I got a photo as he peeked around the tree at me...

What a wonderful experience and picture. Love it.

Cool picture, desmobob. He looks like a shy little creature. One of those Alaska wilderness shows showed a guy shooting one because they were knawling away on a wooden building that was made of pine. Are they that destructive to pine?

They are the cutest, shyest, funniest little critters around, but they can be extremely destructive.

They often do considerable damage to loggers' equipment, chewing hydraulic hoses, tires, tool handles, etc. I've never heard of them chewing a building because it was made of pine, but I have seen the sadness on my buddy's face when we showed up at his hunting cabin in the fall to find they had chewed off huge patches of the outside layer off all the T-111 sheathing he used on the new cabin. The glue must have been tasty.

A whole lot of dog owners in the rural northeast have had to deal with their pet getting a face full of quills. I know I have.

I think at least one state protects them, as they are one of the few animals a lost and starving person can catch and kill with no rifle or bow.

Great porcupine photo, Bob. None of those in my part of the world. Maybe I could trade you some armadillos for a few of those porcupines.

I was surprised to hear that from you and Colonel26. I had always assumed they were all over the US. Well, you know what they say about assuming...

I've always been fascinated by armadillos. Then, I read something about them carrying leprosy, or something like that... yuk. I finally got to see armadillos when I did Biking Across Kansas several years ago; a bicycling trip from Colorado to Missouri. I saw a whole lot of armadillos but, unfortunately, they were all road kill... I never got to see a live one!

This discussion reminds me of one of the more touristy things I have done in my life. In August of 2019, my wife and I vacationed in Maine, somewhere between Camden and Boothbay Harbor I saw a dead Porcupine alongside the road. Having never seen one, I did a quick turnaround and went back to take a couple of pictures, my wife stayed in the car, shaking her head at me. When I lived in Michigan I was South of Porcupine territory.
Oh, and I would make you the same deal on Armadillos, they have gotten thick here in S. Illinois.

desmobob, Porcupines don't inhabit our part of creation either, plenty of Armadillos though.

Haven't had any real interesting pictures to share lately but this week I chose a few to show what goes on around an automatic feeder. The feeder had been set to go off around 4 pm CDST, it has been reset to run at 7 am and 4 pm real time. Treefarmer

cudgee, importing exotic critters is not a good idea but if those little long nosed Porcupines would eat fireants and also be controlled, some one could make a fortune!

Are y'all hunting yet? Gun season is over here. But Christmas weeks we have a youth season and we're going to try to get the boys a couple.

Wade, we had a 4 day season on Thanksgiving week end. It closed and tomorrow we have 7 days of Muzzle loader, then on December 12th regular gun season starts again and runs through February 21st and then another 7 day M/L and archery season closing on Feb.28.
This is the 2nd year that the bag limit has been cut to 5 deer per season. We only have 4 doe days in our zone and the bag limit is 2 does. So if we are fortunate we can kill 2 does and 3 bucks or just 5 bucks. I killed 1 doe and 3 bucks last season, after awhile it gets to be work. Since I've gotten older, I'm not as mad at the deer as I once was, most mornings I don't go and if it's cold or rainy I usually talk myself out of going. Years ago I worked at it!

You are right chief, the far left of the photo looks almost like one deer with two tails.
Some fine wild life photos fellers keep up the good work. I went across upper Michigan a few years ago and the only porcupines I saw was roadkill. Same thing in Maine last year, they must be like "possums on the half shell" roaming mostly at night.
