Dogg, I like that set up! I know you love your 66-1 as much as I love my 65-3! I’m not sure it gets much better.

Tonight I can talk about being one very proud Grandpa my 12yo grandson Camden shot his first deer a 13 point 180 lb buck and I was in the stand with him and assisted with the two hours of tracking.

I ask because with the scouts we had a couple of winter campouts. It was upstate NY, so, yes, there was plenty of snow. My favorite memory of those winters was with the snow snakes!

I'm originally from the Rochester, NY area......but no, we don't have a too cold to "not go" temp.
When we tent camped 4+ years ago we did have a few mornings that touched the lower 40's....and we were freezing.
Taught me to always leave wood for the morning....LOL

Yeah, what's a snow snake??

Snow snake: Use a broom stick or 2x2 about 3' or 4' long (longer if you'd like) , shape it up and paint it like a snake, apply a little wax, then see who can slide it the farthest in a packed down trough of snow. It started over 500 years ago with the Iroquois Indians.

In the Scouts, there were two winners: 1) to the snake that went the farthest; 2) to the best looking snow snake

As an old Scoutmaster I can say the best campouts we had were usually “winter camp”. We camped year around, typically one campout every 4 to 6 weeks. Rain, shine, snow, regardless the weather or forecast and despite the concerns of some of the scouts’ mothers. When we had a campout scheduled we went.

I have to say Texas weather is not upstate New York. We seldom have blizzards or “whiteouts”. But we sometimes left town when it was cold and pouring rain, or even snowing. In less than ideal weather the scouts learned a lot - how to stay warm and dry, how to start a fire and cook breakfast when all the wood is wet, and so on. Years later I still get together with those scouts (now men in their thirties and forties). Those winter campouts are the ones they talk about. They’re filled with memorable events, like when it rained almost continually for three days forcing them to set up camp in the rain and cook meals under a “dining fly”. Or they woke up Saturday morning with 6 inches of snow on the ground and more coming down, or it hailed during the night, etc.

When I read this, for some reason, I had a totally different image come into my head. It had to do with 'yellow' and writing your name in the snow. Please forgive me...I digressed back to my silly days of childhood antics and immaturity.

G-Dog...what an AWESOME experience for your grandson to be able to take a nice Buck. Some GREAT memory making that day. Congrats to you and your grandson.

There's one thing that really makes me feel sorry for girls - they grow up.
