Love reading how things came about.

There ain’t much of a story to tell. Here on my little place the does like to bed down of an evening. About 4:30 two popped over the hill and stopped at a pile of corn about 30 yards from my ground blind. Unfortunately, they were facing me with just the slightest bit of side showing. I made a angled shoulder shot on one and missed somehow . She ran off and this one turned almost broadside in the middle of a mown lane just begging me to shoot, and I did.

I went and got my oldest boy and the tractor with the boom pole and we field dressed her. I used my new to me Buck 722 Spitfire and it worked really well. That drop point recurved blade unzipped her just as if she had a zipper and I was able to cur through the breast bone and pelvis with very little effort.

Ps. I used a Buck 105 to clean my doe last Monday - owned that knife 44 years!

Those 105s are real nice looking knives. I bet they’re about perfect for taking of Bambi’s clothes.

Camp meat good for all of ya---our Gun Season opens today but it is pouring rain & ain't stopping gonna be a camp day here...my nieghbors cousin from the thumb is up with his son they trap these small lakes hard during the gun season he doesn't care for deer hunting much but I got a spot with their names on it that kid will see the monster this year......

Congratulations to you Dogg and to your nephew for your deer. 130 lbs. for a doe and 180 lbs. for a buck are about as big as we ever see. My doe was just over 100 lbs. and that’s typical for a big one here (I usually keep passing until I get one that size). I did shoot a 130 lbs doe several years ago for a buddies family - they met me at a processor who weighed it and said it was the biggest doe brought to his business that fall (and that was in December). I saw one big buck two weeks ago - he was chasing a doe and ran four times across the lane but so quick I didn’t even try to stop him - don’t want a badly wounded deer on my hands.

Going back to the farm this coming week for three days and our weather JUST finally turned fall like this weekend - I’ll wear something besides a t-shirt Tuesday. I heart shot my doe at 135 yards on a woods lane with a Ruger M77 in .270 WIN (pictured) that my wife gave me our first year being married - I’ve had it 43 years. I put a new Leupold scope on it last year and I can see in dim light again. Dogg, I see you used your faithful Savage 99 - I forgot what caliber it is (went back a few pages and read that it is a .300 Savage). Colonel Wade, what did you use to kill your deer - I’m going to guess a Marlin levergun? I’m going to use my Ruger 44 Carbine this coming week and hunt in the woods for that buck. OH

This was taken early in the day while my oldest son was still I thr blind with me. My Marlin 336SC in .35 Remington that I killed the doe with, and my Marin 1894 .357 that he was using.

That’s a fine arsenal right there!

A 100lb doe is good size here, although 110lbs isn’t unheard of. But 80-90 is more common

Bruce, the archery season has been in for a while but I don't do the stick and string thing. You are correct, in our zone, rifle season (gun season) starts Thanksgiving Day, runs for 4 days, close and then reopens on December 12 and runs through February 21, 2021. There is an early M/L season Dec. 5-11 and another after regular gun season, Feb.22-28.

We only get one week and two weekends for modern gun. I’ve been threatening to get a muzzleloader to lengthen my season, but haven’t yet.

13 minutes after sunset tonight big momma came to the corn pile. Did I mention big? She was in the neighborhood of 110+lbs.

I had gone out this evening kind of half heartedly thinking of shooting a deer, so I took a rifle that I’d never hunted with, but wanted to try on a deer just in case one came in real close and was begging to be shot! It was a first year (1973) Marlin 1894C .357 shooting 158 grain flat soft lead nose bullets. it worked, she’s in the cooler but I like the 35 Rem better.

To unzip her I used the Buck 722 Spitfire, to do the butchering I used the CASE 2 blade folding hunter Precious got me for my birthday. I was real impressed with the CASE.
