All About Pocket Knives

Stopped by an estate sale and noticed they had a little personal care box for sale. Some Sears scissors, a pair of tweezers with an earwax cup on the end and what I thought was a corn knife and an ink eraser. Looking at the knife and the eraser I thought I could see grain in the handles. $10 and brought it home. The case, after some investigation, is marked Henry Sears 1865. I do believe the handles are old ivory but I can be corrected and I have decided that instead of a corn knife it might be a quill knife and goes with the ink eraser. No marks but I think the mountings are silver. Anyway, kinda excited about it. The case is in horrible shape. Tell me what you think.

I think you got it right the first time. Corn Knife but Ray (knife7knut) hasn't weighed in yet. The lines in the handles suggest French Ivory Celluloid to me. I think you got a great deal. For me, it gives off a turn of the century vibe (either side).

Floyd, you know what they say, "Even a blind chicken gets a kernel of corn now and then". I'm eager to see what Ray has to say about it.

Fresh from the Beloit show, I got these; a Stag Joseph Allen English jack, a H.Boker ebony large Coke, a horn handled Remington stockman in really nice condition, a bone swell center Witte Hdwr jack from St.Louis, and the prize for the weekend was the horn handled Wharncliff and Quill sharpening bladed little jack with Cast Steel out on the blade and a tang stamp that is going to take some serious detective work to figure out. I've been eyeing this knife for several years. It has a true split backspring for the two blades and probably dates from the very early 1800's and possibly earlier yet. The owner had $275 on the knife and made me an offer that I absolutely couldn't refuse. I now have two true split backspring knives. The other one is a two blade hawkbill I bought from the same dealer and dates from close to the same era. I may put pictures of the unknown maker knife on a few other threads hoping someone can figure it out.____Dave

I think the 4th picture down is a cuticle cutter. Did I spell that right? I believe they are both for doing personal cutting stuff on feet. ____Dave

It's a little ironic that you got the Kabar with the electrician's knife. I once had to use my own to cut an electric line in a pinch. My handy helper, however, had cut the wrong breaker out of 2 for the room. I was spared doing the 110 dance by the grace of the Delrin handles and my own rubber-soled boots. The blade took the brunt of it, but most of the damage was merely cosmetic and the knife still holds a scary sharp edge.
I believe this knife was built by Camillus on the 23 frame.

Dave you got not just volume but quality in that knife raid. I keep trying to pick one but like the kid with the Christmas catalogue I like them all. And so old! Also thanks for the input on the cuticle cutter. That makes a lot of sense. I have been looking at it's handle to see if it too is indeed French Ivory Celuloid. Not like your loot but interesting to investigate. Congratulations.

Thanks Doglegg. Yeah, I've had tons of fun researching one and two dollar knives or knives people have given me. It's a little like having the thrill of the hunt last much longer after finding something. ___Dave

I won an auction for this Russell Barlow It's a 1875 to 1975 commemorative NOS with all the goodies it came with.

That is a really knice grab. Always fun to have the accruements .

Day trip for MODOC training took me near two nice stops in STLO. I always stop and check for knives. Glad I did today!
Found these two broken ones, and bought them for posterity sake. Shapleigh and Keen Kutter.
Next stop produced two: one is a Walden, and the other a Keen Kutter. Both in great condition.
Check out the bone on the Kutter!!
Sometimes the cases are empty, and sometimes I leave smiling.

Nice pick ups TW!! Congratts!!

My son just picked up some vintage knives and this Olsen Knife Co 2700 8" BUF Solingen Germany knife was in the lot. Can't find much on this knife other than its probably from the early 80's. I found a simiar one, 4700 for sale for a price around $275.

Did we find a jewel amongst a box of stones? Anybody help me out on this?

Olson knives started out as Hudson Knife Co. in Howard Michigan. Just type in Olson knives in google and you will discover a lot of info on these fine looking knives. I suspect, but do not know, that he had many of his hunting knives manufactured in Germany.

I found this little pen knife by E.C. Simmons Hardware Co. It's only 2-3/8" long with embossed aluminum handles so it weighs next to nothing. Half stops and excellent open and close snap on both blades. Both blades marked "E.C. / SIMMONS / ST. LOUIS."
