All About Pocket Knives

Well Fella's....I got the Rough Rider in today. ...Let me tell ya,the fit and finish is just as good.. or better than the Bear&Sons.
Also...it has brass liners and pins...plus the blade is razor sharp.....all in all, I like it better than the Bear!!
I thought that I would never see the day that I would be able to say something like that!!
I am more than happy to put it in with my collection of Scouts!!

Johnnie I hate to hear that about the Bear & Sons, I had hoped it would be a better quality knife...It looks kinda plain jane, the scales are rather sad looking and the punch doesn't look to sharp.

We have a small scout troop here and I wanted to buy some knives for the boy's...I just can't bring myself to give them a Chinese made knife.....

That old knife belonged to one of my wife's uncles that was killed by a booby trapped pistol in France in 1944. That knife and the old WATTS knife pictured in another post were among the personal possessions that shipped home after his death.

I'm still trying to figure out if was in the 10th Mountain Division or if he just ended up with one of their knives.

I've cleaned it up to where it is now and think I'll just let it stay as it is. It'll belong to my stepson when he's ready for it as it was his great uncle that it came from. Right now, I'm just the custodian for it. He doesn't know that, but he will when he gets through his teenage years. LOL

Well Bob....I guess Bear&Sons will have to do.
I agree...I wouldn't want to give an American Boy Scout a knife made in any Country other than our own.
But if I heard correctly....I think the Boy Scouts of America were actually using knives made in China...(because of costs)
That was why Dimitri (MillerBros) had the thread started that had a link to a site that you could protest against it and donate money for the cause......REMEMBER.

The only counterpoint to that would be if it wasn't marked China, most RR would be liked for what they are.

Inexpensive..... but not cheap.

Johnnie I do remember, I signed up and donated to the cause...and that's one of the reasons I won't give a foregin made knife to the boy's. I have handled a RR and must admit they are put together quite well. I shouldn't have criticized your Bear & Son without having it in hand myself...my apologies.
I believe the best thing is to buy one of each...Bear and Remington and see for myself, I wish there were more to choose from. I just want to give these young fellow's a good quality knife...plus I'll get two more knives (being a little selfish)....

I have several 1950-70`s Imperial, Colonial, etc. scout knives that I would be willing to donate to some Boy scouts. They ain`t perfect but they are not junk either, all are in serviceable condition. Just say the word and I will send them to you.

They were made in the good ole U.S.A.

No need to apologize....you told the truth. ..The Bear is ugly,plain,no brass and dull as a butter knife!!...put the RR and Bear side by side.....the only reason People would pick the Bear is because it was made in the US. ...with Politics aside...anyone can see the RR is a better looking knife......and when in hand you can feel that the RR has better fit & finish.
I am not a Political person nor Religious........in other words I have nothing to sway my judgment ....with that being said I prefer the RR over the B&S.
I bought this knife only for my Scout collection....cost me with S&H a whole 10 dollar bill. .....I do not plan on buying anymore China made knives....nor will I Bear & Sons!!
Even though I'm not going to buy anymore doesn't mean that I am going to LIE and say the B&S knife is better just because it was made in the US!!

Anyone who has a problem with that can contact me by pm.....I do not appreciate a foul mouthed member...especially one who will put down China made knives but yet shops a WALMART!!

I don't want to further the debate over China vs. non-China, but I would like to say that what's sad to me is that coming generations of collectors won't have the choices we've had. It's only a matter of time before they're all made in China. (or not made at all) Here's a couple of Scouts I picked up at the Flea Market last weekend. A Western (Boulder) with green bone handles and a Camillus with jigged Delrin slabs.

Thanks Phil, what do you think for a timeline on that Western? 40's-50's? I don't seem to come across too many of the bone handled scout knives, or atleast ones in my price range, and where the handles are completely intact. Several nice examples in this thread though. Fun to see! WB

I'm having a little trouble making out the second line of the tang stamp on that Western, but if it reads "Boulder, Colo." as I suspect it does, the time frame for that stamping is c.1951-1978 according to Goin's Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings".

What do you guys think of this one? The tang has Camillus over NEW YORK over USA.

Nice Camillus. I have not seen a Scout like that with a Phillips screwdriver or such nice stag. Is that factory stag or a rehandle?

Its hard to make out wether theres a line above Camillus....if there is ....its from late 1970's to early 1980's...if there isn't its from 1976 forward.
I believe its been rehandled.

There is one line under Camillus which is in italics. I have never known Camillus to produce or sell them. The story that went with it was an employee made it for himself then it trickled down to me. It's been in my safe for 20 years. Like I said though it's the "story" so I'm sticking to it.

I dug this one out today as well. I's a Case Tested era Rough Black pattern 6445. It hasn't seen daylight for a long time. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Thanks, it does read Boulder, Colo. Not really up on Western knives but have been told that ones without pattern numbers pre-date 1954. Anyone know if that holds water or just a generic dating tool?
