J Nowill & Sons has made/is making some second pattern F/S but they are marked as such. For me, the hand ground blade of a 2nd pattern knife marks it as WWII. You can tell it's hand ground by the flat spot just south of the guard as noted in the picture below.

I picked up these two westerns at an estate sale.

I also grabbed these ones at a flea market. Boker, schrade walden camillus, and a sheffield with no makers name on it.

What are the stamps on those 2 Westerns and could we get a shot of the back side of the W49 sheath?

The W49 should have guard stamps rather than ricasso stamp OR it should have an "A" date code with that sheath. The 1978 "B" code sheaths are the earliest I have seen the sheaths with WESTERN stamped on the sheaths between the sets of double lines near the throat.

Nice finds abrowe, I especially like those two westerns.

abrowe, the one on right has some fine looking bone on it. I can't quite read the tang stamp on it.

Zzy the W49 is a date stamp A the W46 has no date stamp only Western USA.

Treefarmer the stamp reads made in Sheffield England, there is no maker on the stamp. Other than the wear on the main blade it is a well put together knife with good snap.

While in Pigeon Forge we stopped at the local metal craft shop home to a Forged in Fire contestant and I scored this pocket fixed blade made from pony horseshoe

Scott those horseshoe knives are neat , I bought my grandson one the last time we were up there. There are several knife places around that area, hope you get to enjoy some of them.

That is pretty neat. My grandsons gave me just like that, from up there along with the pictures of them working on it with a hammer. Son-in-law found a scabbard for it somewhere else.

I had an unusual happening at church tonight. At the family night supper, one of my friends hands me two case knives. What's the deal? He said trade me something some day. Then later on in the auditorium another buddy came by and laid a NIB Moultrie 999i camera on the pew beside me. He had found it in a deceased relative's mud room. Had a good supper, enjoyed Wednesday night service and came home with a pile of goodies! One is a "Texas Jack", a 6292 new grind, 7 dot '83, the other is a 6318 SS ('13).

"A" = 1977

On the W46, with no date code and no Boulder Colo in the stamp, that would put it as being manufactured between 1973 and 1976. Date codes started in 1977 and Boulder was dropped starting in 1973.

Saw an ad in the local newspaper that came out this afternoon of an estate sale about 30 miles from me. Figured I'd hustle down there and see if there was anything worth saving.
Picked up an interesting array that while not in great shape for most of them were inexpensive.
The best one had to be the Case XX Chromium cleaver for a dollar.Interesting that the blade was chrome plated but the tang was not!
The knives were marked $3 apiece and I bought three. The first one was a Wilbert Cutlery Co, very large sleeveboard jack. The master blade has been sharpened to death and the pen blade is broken and there is a chunk of bone missing from the mark side and the blade was sitting a bit proud but something about this knife spoke to me.I smoothed the blade out and dropped it back inside the handle and tomorrow will fit a piece of bone to the handle and have me a nice EDC for awhile.What is unusual to me is the long front bolster.
Next is an unusual figural knife with both blades broken stamped W&H Co. Newark NJ. I believe this is from Whitehead & Hoag although it could also be Wiebusch & Hilger.One side has a full length graphic of a train and cars and the other side says The Travelers Insurance Co. Hartford Conn. Ticket Department.Bought it just for the handles.
Last is a 4 blade scout/utulity marked Made in USA with black jigged composition handles.It looked pretty rough but the master blade is full and it cleaned up rather nicely. Also picked up a couple of non knife items;a couple of early motorized model cars that are parts enough to make one complete car for $5 and a 4" circular saw that is powered by clamping it into an electric drill for $4.

I got these at the North Star Blade Collectors meeting on Saturday. A Keen Kutter sleeveboard whittler, a Waterville tuxedo in tortoise , a really nice HS&B bone jack, and an early Utica sheepsfoot jack (arched stamp)___Dave

Easy to see why you guys keep meeting, those are some good pick ups.

Found two USA junkers in a big wad of cheap imports and Zombie killers today. A big Kabar equal end jack knife with a broken spring on the clip blade and a well used but all together SCC electricians knife. The Kabar pen blade snaps with authority from the 1/2 stop.

A coworker give me this Schrade 34OT he found on the side of the road. A little beat up but a good dependable cutter.

A 34OT was my first knife, which before me, was used by my granddad for 30 years before I got it. IT's just the right size, and I like that slightly proud sheepsfoot. These days I've kinda retired it for a Sabre Monarch 231 (contract 881 for Cole International in the '70s), but it does still see some use.

I like the size as well Cody! Really neat you have your Granddads knife! My grandpa's both died when I was very young so I never knew about their knives. Can you show a picture of your Sabre Monarch? I am unfamiliar with them. Take care of your grandfather's knife.
