For my grandson, I got him the amber bone peanut. My son in law got the blue medium stockman, and my stepson got the worn amber trapper. I, of course, got the blue canoe.

Cheers.
I know some fellers that are going to be very pleased with those gifts. Good choices. ::nod:: ::tu::
I'm sure they will. My stepson lives in rural Arkansas and is an avid hunter. My son in law works in a oil refinery, so a general use knife would fill that role. and my grandson is 13 and really needs to start carrying a knife when he is not is not in school. As for me, I'm just an old canoe-head.

My growing floatilla.

An old canoe-head??? I resemble that remark!!!! ::rotflol:: ::clapping:: I'm sure your gifts will be greatly appreciated!

Case ignited a blast from the past when they resurrected the family including the canoe below. The good Ol' Gumfuddy family! It's known as the Rough Black Synthetic family these days. A workin' mans' friend if there ever was one...

I like the Gum Fuddys. I’d like to have a small and regular canoe in that style. But first, I’m looking for a small canoe (Baby Butterbean) to match the blue one I just got. There is one on flea-bay, but I’m not paying what he’s asking.

Keep lookin' amigo, there's one out there. Some of the vendors on flea-bay are looking for fools who're easily separated from their money. Of course, in the world of collecting, how bad you want a particular knife can make you tolerate a bit of that. Good luck in your search. If I spot one somewhere I'll give you a heads-up.

Congrats Charlie! As you know that is one of the early one's I got when I started to pursue canoes. In a few days I'll be getting one with burnt bone which commemorates the Monitor vs. the Merrimac civil war engagement. It was suggested that it is fairly rare but it would not surprise me if you or others have it in your stash.

No, I don't have one of those....yet. They are however somewhat rare and highly collectable. I could be wrong but I believe that edition was limited to 500 each. It's a good one to have. Can't wait to see the pic.

The most recent addition to my fleet is this. The first thing I noticed is that It's rather thick for a canoe. That's all due to the backspring which is as strong as it looks. It also has a very distinct half-stop on each blade, rather uncommon for the pattern. I have only one other KA-BAR folder (it was made by Camillus) & I think I've read that Canal Street & Queen also made some KA-BARs. I don't recognize the profile of the master blade on this knife but I'm guessing Queen made it. Just a guess.

Very nice addition...some fat stag on that one.

I too have always thought that Queen made these canoes but have not been able to confirm it. I have three Ka-Bar canoes see below...

I agree. Some neat canoes.

I figured someone who knows where they came from will see this eventually and tell us a little about them.

This conversation has gotten me back on the trail of more info on these knives. I had put the issue on a back burner a while ago and moved on to other things. I haven't been able to find anything more searching the web so I did what I probably should have done in the very beginning...I emailed Ka-Bar, complete with photos, asking for some history. I tried to call them but it's a holiday weekend so all I got was a recording. I'll let you know how/if they respond.

I have this red one # dr64131 ss. I think the blue one is as well but the box has 6431 ssm number the blue is called bold . The white looks just like them but it is just a bold with a #54131 ssm . I'm new to this just learning.

Those are called "Big Chief" canoes. They are very collectable. If you're not familiar with the Case model numbers the first number is the handle material, 6 being bone and 5 is stag. The second number is the number of blades, in this case 4. and the last three numbers are the pattern, 131 is the canoe pattern. The DR on your red one is for dark red. They sometime add the color, if it's special, on the front of the stamp. So dr64131 = dark red, bone handle, four blades, canoe pattern.

That black stag is a beauty!!! ::tu::

Technically this may not be a true canoe but it's close enough for me. This is a Canal Street Cannitler, a sort of cross between a Canoe and Whittler. It has three blades like a Whittler but has the frame shape of a Canoe. This one just joined my collection. The handles are Amber Camel Bone and the blade steel is D2.

Camel bone plus D2 is imo a great combination thereby making a great Canoe. Unless there is a cutlery rule somewhere to contradict me ::paranoid:: , I consider the frame as determining "canoeship." I use the term Cannliter but I have always considered it a Canoe. I suppose if someday someone trots out 6 blades in a Canoe frame I might reconsider; but no, even then I will think of it as a Canoe.

All of which is to say, Phil, I think you have a great Canoe. ::groove::
