Thanks Tom. The jack knife is obviously heavily cleaned bit the whaler knife looks to have very minimal use. They came in a group of Remington knives i bought. Been fun reading threw this thread about these knives.

Beautiful old knives guys! I lucked into this H&B 3 3/4" jack the other day. Pretty decent shape considering the age, I'm not sure what the handle material is, maybe horn? If it's wood I have no idea what type.

Ken, Lee, thank you for the comments. This is the first H&B I've been able to find, based on this example they seem to be very high quality knives.

Very nice knife, John. I like the bar shield and the matchstrike long pulls. Nice looking handle material, whatever it is. I personally think wood, however, if someone with your experience is unsure I think my 2 cents worth is worth just about that.

I have a question about these "Bar Shields".
To ME they actually look like a match strike, yet the long zig-zag type nail nicks are referred to as "match strikes"

Is there a reason that so many old knives all share these "bar shields, and they are not used for or called a match strike?

Beyond that I have to say that those scales look like beautifully clean/clear buffalo horn. Great knife!

The bar shields I have seen are smooth polished nickel silver - would be difficult to strike a match on them. As for the so called "match striker pulls", I don't believe those were intended for use as match strikers either. That's just what they're usually called. I'm sure any folks that disagree with me will be posting soon!

That is why I asked.

After reading Ken's comment I took a closer look at the cover and changed my mind. When magnified, they definitely appear to be horn.

Thanks Dan, I am now convinced it's horn and it does show some similarities to the horn on the whaler that Keith posted on the previous page.
