It's called a "top-lock" John! Beautiful knives you're posting! This is my first post in this thread cuz I didn't want to get involved until I was ready to post some pics of mine, but I felt compelled to answer your question! I've got some catchin' up to do!

My pleasure buddy, glad to help! This is my newer version of that knife, same thing except they filled-in the top section! They work on the same principle as a picklock on an auto, one needs to "pick" the tab to close the knife! It's kindda hard to see from my pics, but if you look closely you can see the black tab at the top!

You're welcome John, and thanks to you also! These knives are so slim and slight it's hard to believe they sell for over US$200., but they do! I got mine from Mark at SSk so the price was much more reasonable!

Nice looking knife, Mark.

These three are American made, and feature two lockback blades.


1986 Coleman Western 945. Serrated main, straight edge secondary. A very thick and hefty knife suited to hard use.
Locks are directly beside each other, which isn't very ergonomic.

Camillus USA 902 Mini Double Lockback Promaster. Locks are staggered, so it's easy to release locked blades.

While the model was sold as Western later on with different handles, it was introduced before Camillus bought Western. At just over three inches closed, it gets it done without getting in the way. I have owned and carried it 4 years.

Moore Maker (Utica) 5213UDLB Double Lockback Trapper.
It is more a midlock, as the lock releases are in the middle.

Bonus: A pretty mediocre Bear and Son. The blade is a lockback, but the saw/guthook combo is a linerlock.
The main is stiff, the saw linerlock is too thin, and the saw itself opens and closes with friction. It is not on a backspring.


The important thing is that the sheath it came with is likely the only one I have on hand that will fit the Western, but I can't find it

Hey I'm having a hard time finding any of these things. NOT. A few that was gifts. A few that are a little different. The top knife is on what I'd call a trapper frame the big blade locks open and you depress the small blade to close it just like older ones posted above. A couple of big old fat boys.

Here's one of mine I wanted to show off. It's a Back-Lock-Barlow type advertising knife. The. advertising on it is for Kelly Springfield Tires. They had a factory in my home town of Cumberland, MD where my Dad worked as a welder for 10-years as I was a kid so I'm pretty stoked about having found this one on eBay a year or so ago.

It's a great little reminder of my Dad. Who was also my best friend.

It is stamped: Barlow (over) Vandium on the pile side & Stainless Japan on the reverse side.

Glad you found a nice reminder of your dad. Neat little knife. Cumberland is only 40min from me. My wife and I use to do the Western Maryland rail trail. Small world.

Thanks for the compliment Tom! I jus' LOVE your new Barlow! I like my knives with 1 blade either spear-point or drop-point, and when the blade flows smoothly and straight into the handle it's just about the perfect knife, jus' like the one you posted! And what a great way to remember your best friend and have him with you all the time!

Found some more and I've probably got more somewhere..
This cute little feller, all 2 1/4 inches is a hoss. Nalco adv.knife given to my by the guy that delivered Nalco chemicals to my work place. Tang sez washita cut.co over Texarkana usa, on the back sez stainless British Hong Kong.

One of my more interesting and unusual locking knives is this black lip pearl A.G. Russell Mediterranean Barlow. Notice how the entire mark side scale slides as the blade opens. Pushing on the edge of the bolster releases the blade to close.
