I find the LoomFixer compliments a sheath knife very well. The big sheepsfoot is great for all those utility tasks, and the pen blade handles the detail work.

This is an engaging thread. Bittersweet in some respects, because my most regretted “trade-away” was a mint ten-dot Case red bone Loom Fixer, acquired from JIm Sargent. A provenance of historical import, in my mind, went with that knife.

Here’s one quibble:

I do have a mint Case which is marked on the wood handle CASE XX WHALER, with a bail. True, it doesn’t say, “NEW ENGLAND WHALER”.

Good point about entanglement in machinery. And, yes, a mariner does not want to lose his knife overboard, especially if he’s routinely working over water, out on a yard-arm or bow-sprit. He also does not want to be aloft and fumble his knife, and lacking a lanyard, have to climb down to the deck to retrieve it; or have it drop from above and land on a shipmate.

Jdub shows a nice Case in that noted ten-dot red bone.

Both Gunsil and LongBlade have disabused me, with their illustrations, of believing that a NEW ENGLAND WHALER-marked knife must either have a bail or a drill-hole for a lanyard. I had long believed that the bail or lanyard hole would necessarily distinguish a Loom Fixer from a sheep’s-foot-bladed mariner’s knife. The photos posted show otherwise.

I've seen this thread going and I surely associate the Case Loom Fixer with my favorite Kentucky Colonel Wade. But I have one and didn't even remember - it's part of my 1970's Case collection and not one that I use or carry - basic Case 6217 of the mid 1970's with jigged wooden handles (Four-Dot). OH

But I’m not sure I’d call it a loomfixer as it doesn’t appear to have a swayback frame.

Well it’s a lot closer, and another beautiful knife. But still not a LoomFixer.

Nothing wrong with those two. They are great knives. A LoomFixer is a very specific pattern.

Showed these a few years back and certainly fit here.

Two CASE XX 17 examples. Nice blood or cranberry red scales on the 6217. The 2217 is a pretty rare bird and unused/ near mint at that. Personally never observed another example but they are likely out there I would hope.

I’ve never seen the black handled one before, I didn’t know they existed. And the bone one, wow! I have a USA era bone handled one that’s been pretty well used that I carry sometimes. If you ever get tired of them.......
