Here's an old short line #1 Hawkbill that I just picked up. It has an etch on the blade that says HAAS MILLER with Philadelphia 40 ,Pa. underneath it. Ive had no luck figuring that out.

Always liked this piece ,3 line, salesman mark, block etch, 3 back spring whittler, punch... My first attempt at pics....so bear with me please..

It looks too good and I doubt that this is really an full old knife.
I would like to see larger pictures of tang stamps and etching.
Or find out the storage history of this knife.

Vit I was thinking the same thing. The stamps look to have been made with a pantograph and really don't match the old 3 line stamp from 1917. We need a clear photo all tangs.

I could be sure that a full regrind of all the blades was done, but the etching ...

I do appreciate your feedback,,, I acquired the knife 6-7 years ago. I was told it was out of the Camillus collection... I am not real good on pics,,but I will try to get better pic of the tang stamps,,,,, I need to know for sure also. Thanks

This is as good as I can do with my phone. I have been watching AAPK since 2014 and have a lot of quality pieces. Thought I would start digging some of my stuff out and join in on the conversations. The first piece I post has some questions, I don't want you to think that I am trying to push questionable pieces. I do appreciate the concern and need some input on the knife. If these pics aren't good enough then I will bring the knife to the shows and you can look at it first hand,,and help me decide,, I do want and respect your feedback.. Thank you Tom

Ok WVbladetrade here is what I don't like about the knife. Take a look at the tang stamp chart and see if you can find a match. I cannot. If this is supposed to be avery early knife as in 1917 there is no hyphen between New And York and there are no serifs at the ends of the letters The blades look brand new. If this is supposed to be a later knife, say 1946-53 with the block lettering the stamp is still wrong as well as the punch. By the I still can't read the patent number on the punch. Have you looked that up? I am by no means an expert on Camillus but I have seen a few and there are just too many red flags on this one.

..............I only have one straight 3 line marked Camillus and the stamping on mine doesn't look like yours, all my other 3 line Camillus are the arched, underlined marking!!................ ......................

Well I guess I don't have the same reference you have but I would like to get it . What is your reference? It would also be interesting to know where you found such a pristine salesman's sample.

WVbladetrade that patent number checks out. Granted to Moritz Mayer of Camillus Cutlery Co. I hope you will forgive my skepticism but you don't often see an old knife in that kind of condition. I like to collect Camillus knives so I really would like to know what book you have that shows that 1908 tang stamp.

Greg,this is one of those times that you really need to read the knife and not so much what the stamp says.It isn't often you see such a knife that has soooo much going for it.Etch,saleman's #,punch,3 backsprings,condition,one of the better knives you will see.Some of these old stamps may have only been used for a very short time and few are left.Look in Goins and see all the early Case stamps that were used,and they are some that aren't in there either.I would bet Case wasn't the only company using different stamps.

.......WHOA!!!.........just looked thru some of my oldest Camillus knives that are not in my displays and I have found this one's twin brother 3 3/8",3 backsprings,rogers bone,bar shield,-this is also the only 3 backspring Camillus I have- only it is 4 line marked(punch blade is unmarked)!!!............ ....................

I hear you Roger! I wasn't familiar with that punch either but their is info right here on AAPK about it so as I eliminated my negative thoughts one by one I am much more receptive of the knife. Do you know if any references that include info about this Camillus collection that he speaks of?

Greg,likely the Nilo Miori collection.He was president of Camillus for many years and worked for Albert Baer for more than 50 years.Among that collection were Camillus and Ulster factory collection knives.Also were at least 10 Maher and Grosh knives that I ended up.There were made by Ulster,but strangely a couple that were Miller Brothers made.

I still do not believe that carbon steel could have maintained such brilliance for 100 years, if it is not lay 100 years in a barrel of oil.
In addition, the obvious signs of regrind continue to confuse me.
I apologize for skepticism, if I'm wrong.
